Q: Unlocking probs with IPhone 4

I purchased a second hand iPhone 4 from a friend at Xmas when she ungraded to the iPhone 5. As part of her contract her old phone could now be unlocked. She sent a request for me on the 23 Dec and never heard anymore from apple or Vodafone. A new request was submitted about a week ago and according to Vodafone this phone has now been unlocked and was instructed to connect it to iTunes. I did this, backed the phone up, then restored it, the inserted new SIM card and connected to iTunes and still nothing!!!! When I first tried to connect it, it said activation failed. I was then given the instructions by Vodafone to back up restore etc which I have done. Every time I put a tmobile sim in it says no sim inserted. Please can someone help as this has been going on since December and I'm now fed up, Vodafone have said there's nothing more they can do :))))

According to apple it has been unlocked as have an email confirming that the phone is now unlocked and to connect it to iTunes, etc. When I put non vodafone sim in the carrier is EE 14.0 when the Vodafone sim is in it says Vodafone uk 14.0

The confirmation e-mail comes from carrier and not Apple.

The iPhone is unlocked, per information provided. Non-Vodafone SIM is able to activate it now.

Since an upgrade iPhone 5 has already been released by the carrier against this, working status of this iPhone could be cleared/explained by them only.

I have a similar issue though not exactly the same. I can't use the internet on my iPhone 4S. Bought it also from a friend, I have received official confirmation that this phone is unlocked from both Apple and Vodaphone. I've done everything in any instruction I could find: new Sim card, going to Apple repair shop, going to my carrier, resetting, restoring, recovery mode, installing as new iPhone.... but every time the settings revert to Vodaphone UK and I can't use the internet. The strange thing is that it DID work for a while, at first when I bought it it did work 6 months until I visited the UK. Then recently someone advised me to hold depressed both the home button and the powerbutton simulaneiously and then do a reinstall. That worked finally... but only until I visited a neighbouring country and all settings have switched back to Vodaphone AGAIN. Now the previous trick doesn't work anymore. I am in despair!! Somebody must know what to do with this problem????

BTW for a long time I did not get the message that the phone was unlocked, but with the last 2 times resetting I suddenly did.

The symptoms you describe are what would happen if the phone had been jailbroken before it was officially unlocked.

If this is true as in 1, confirmed via 2, then iPhone is unlocked forever and you should be able to use Internet along with other services for which phone is designed. The settings would never switch back.

Check with present carrier if they allow Internet under plan you have purchased.
