Before updating my Macbook Pro and doing a full clean-up, it just froze up and I had to reset it by holding in the start-up button.

After the update it just resets for no apparant reason. I get the following error. Does anyone have a clue with what seems to be the issue?

    RPCJ,

you have a 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and a number of these machines are known to have a defect in their NVIDIA GPU. Your GPU panic indicates that your MacBook Pro could have this defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program that was offered for three years from the original date of purchase. The servicing program is still available, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis.

  • Dibenkorn Level 2 (405 points)

Workarounds until you get the HW fixed:  Disabling automatic graphics switching (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4110) can sometimes bypass the problem.  You can also try downloading gfxstatus and set the video to Intel.  http://gfx.io

  • RPCJ Level 1 (0 points)

Thanks a lot. Too bad the issue occured only weeks after my warranty ended. Ah well, Murphy's.

If the problem seems to keep up I will definitely need to get it into repair.

  • RPCJ Level 1 (0 points)

I'm afraid that will effect my working in Creative Suite way too much, or am I wrong about that?

  • Dibenkorn Level 2 (405 points)

Yes.  Setting the video to Intel will disable the fast GPU which will definitiely slow down the rendering the scenes.  However crashing will slow it down even more.  Disabling automatic graphics switching should not slow it down.  That is probably less effective but worth a try.  These are only workarounds to keep the machine up until the HW is fixed.

  • ejcosta Level 1 (0 points)

I've got an early 2013 15" MBP Retina and after this week's OSX update I started seeing the same issue on my laptop. Has anyone else see this on a newer machine? This ***** because this is my work machine.

  • Dibenkorn Level 2 (405 points)

If it is still under the 1-year warranty or the 3-year AppleCare policy they will fix or replace it for free.  Another workaround is to downgrade to the previous OS which apparenlty puts less stress on the GPU.  If you have a Time Machine backup that is easy.  If not, not.

  • RPCJ Level 1 (0 points)

Thanks a lot you guys. I will see if this resolves my issues.

  • ejcosta Level 1 (0 points)

Well, I called Apple support about this and after some back and forth, they suggested resetting the PRAM, which I did, and for now, it seems to have stopped the GPUPanic crash. I will keep an eye on this and post to this group again if this really did the trick. Right now, it looks as if the latest update messed up something that seems to have been fixed with the PRAM reset.

    Thanks for your pointers though.

  • ejcosta Level 1 (0 points)

It's still happening. It was actually stable for half a day, but this morning it crashed again. I think I'm going to head to the Apple store with my MBP.

  • Dibenkorn Level 2 (405 points)

Take a copy of your kernel panic.  Ask for the Video Switching Test (VST).

  • Yalunsa Level 1 (0 points)

same here!!! did you got it fixed?
