Feb 28, 2014 2:13 PM in response to Jarrod Whitleyby andremap,I'm also experiencing this.
I have a MacBook Pro (running Mavericks), and after the last update, the power button no longer put my mac to sleep. And I guess, it is taking longer than usual to show the shut down menu, when holding it. -
Feb 28, 2014 2:20 PM in response to Jarrod Whitleyby baltwo,http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869. But note that the duration might have changed w/10.9.2. I can't test, since I don't have a laptop and I've never used the power button to sleep my iMac, only to shut it down.

Feb 28, 2014 3:59 PM in response to Jarrod Whitleyby Pappasbike,It's about a 2 second press of the button to put it to sleep. The momentary tap or hold time span was altered with this OS.

As Pappasbike says. I presume that Apple attended to the many complaints from Macbook and Air users who were accidentally hitting the button when hitting the Delete or Eject button. It was too sensitive as compared to Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard etc.

Mar 1, 2014 5:48 PM in response to andremapby Strolls,You can also hold down the CTRL key as you press the power button, and this brings up the shutdown menu instantly.

Mar 3, 2014 8:04 AM in response to Strollsby antipoet,It is now press power and hold for a quick 1, 2 count to go right to sleep.
I hadn't done a lot of accidental presses to sleep but enough that this will be a fine compromise.

Mar 8, 2014 4:24 PM in response to antipoetby Malcolm Hamilton,Sorry, people. I used to press the power button and my retina MBP went to sleep. Very nice. Now I press the power button, for 1, 2 count, or whatever, and I get the whole choice (sleep, shut down, turn-into-a pumpkin). Any way I can get back to my old default? (apologies to "Macbook and Air users who were accidentally hitting the button when hitting the Delete or Eject button")

None that I'm aware of. BTW, if http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869 is no longer viable, File a bug report with Apple. for lost functionality.

Mar 8, 2014 4:37 PM in response to antipoetby antipoet,Hey sorry, I should have been more clear - hold for a quick one/two count BUT release before the options menu comes up. It's working for me, hopefully that'll do it for you.

Mar 8, 2014 5:11 PM in response to baltwoby Malcolm Hamilton,I don't know what you have against poetry, antipoet, but you're right about the very "quick one/two count" (I see you're a boxer, not a poet). It's annoying—your timing has to be just right; but it did just work for me.

Mar 8, 2014 5:58 PM in response to Malcolm Hamiltonby leroydouglas,Feb 28, 2014 4:49 AMAfter the newest update I can no longer put my iMac to sleep with the power button. Anyone else experiencing this?
Jarrod- You can turn off this new sleep feature and restore the shutdown/sleep dialog box to pop up when you press the power button.
In Terminal copy & paste in the following command and then press enter:
defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem -bool no

Mar 18, 2014 4:49 AM in response to Pappasbikeby Jarrod Whitley,The strange thing is that my iMac at work doesn't have this issue. I hold the power button for a quick 1, 2, release and the puts the screen to sleep, but for some reason this doesn't work with my iMac at home.
