they can create a Shared Photo Stream for you to see the photos.

Pictures can only show up in photo stream if the picture is in your camera roll and you are connected to wifi.
So let's say someone emails or texts you an image, you can choose to save it in the camera roll and when you're connected to wifi, it will show up in the photo stream.

You can choose to save it to the camera roll, that is correct. It will not show up in the Photo Stream. That is incorrect.
Photo Stream only works with devices that share the same Apple ID or if you set up a shared photo stream for others to view.
