Q: Trying to repair a Time Machine sparsebundle

I am trying to repair a Time Machine sparsebundle file. However I am getting errors at the first step of trying to attach the image.

Maybe it doesn need a fsck or verify?

The hdiutil manual doesn't list anything specific for …

    Error 110 (image not recognized).

    or

    DIHLDiskImageAttach() returned 110

Perhaps it's worth a look for some ideas?

    Drew,

All the seraches I have done suggest that to progress I need to get the sparsebundle attached. And that is the part that fails. Ihave not found anything taht suggests an alternative to attaching or another ways to verify/fix the bundle.

Drag it to Disk Utilities sidebar & then select & try to verify/ repair from there.  The blog above used the same attach command, but without the -noverify -noautofsck args.

I'd also try mounting via another protocol if the NAS has one available. Just incase it's that at fault.

Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.

If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.

If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

    Drew,

I did try DIsk Utility, but when I click Verify, I just get the following in the log.

[DUDiskController viewablePartitions] expecting DUDisk, but got nil

The NAS as itself is working fine, as other volumes are working perfectly.

    Linc,

I'm not gonna rant here about the problems I had with a Time Capsule; that is for another day

What I am looking for is some help on fixing the file, which would be equally applicable if the file is on a 3rd party NAS or a Time Capsule. I know the chance of fixing it is a long shot, but I'm giving it a go.

Incidently, the reason the file got corrupted (I believe), was that we suffered a power outage; neither my Mac nor my NAS has a UPS; conceiveably a Time Capsule could have caused the same type of corruption.

I appreciate that but 10.9 has some strange things that happen via different network protocols, hence the suggestion to remount via another protocol.

As a last ditch effort I'd copy the sparsebundle to another disk & attach directly to the Mac, then I'd try the steps again on an earlier OS, incase 10.9.2 'fixed' something.

I've had a few times when I've had sparse image correction in the past, and I've never been able to resolve it personally.
