Q: 2014 New Black Mac Pro Crashing

This is totally frustrating.

I have a new Mac Pro 2014, preconfigured in Apple Store with 64 GB RAM, 1 TB Flash, AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB graphics with 2 monitors (2560x1440) connected by thunderbolt.

After I installed all my applications, for example, Adobe CS6, the machine starts crashing randomly. It can be one hour or it can be 15 mins after restart.

I can be using Safari, or printing a Word document or just installing a new application and the screens will go black and then, chime and the machine restarts and back to the login screen.

I have called Apple Support 3 times and still the situation remains.

So far, I have

* Installed the Apple Update that addressed an SMC issue

* Updated to 10.9.2

* Disabled all Power Saving features

* Reset the SMC

Now I am running in safe mode for the last 15 mins and monitoring the situation.

Will a product specialise from Apple comment and advise?

Thanks.

Reinstalling OS X Mavericks solved a bunch of problems (system becoming unresponsive to mouse/trackpad clicks, Thunderbolt Display freezing) on my late-2013 Mac Pro. I went through the same routines you did -- resetting SMC and PRAM, repairing permissions, etc -- but the reinstallation in the end solved the problem.

After the initial reinstallation (using the Recovery option when holding the Alt-key), I reinstalled my own stuff with Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup on an external HD -- it went smooth as silk.

    I suggest you reinstall Mavericks.

    No. That doesn't happen here.

If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

    Hi hkoster1

How do I reinstall Mavericks? I do not have any DVD disk or whatever.

Do I download it from App Store?

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Thanks!

    Peter

Do you have a Time Machine backup?

If yes, then reboot while holding the Alt-key and choose the Recovery boot option.

A menu appears with 4 choices:

First use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition.

Then choose to install OS X, which will download Mavericks automatically in the process. Don't use Setup Assistant, so treat it as a new installation using the same userID.

When done, use Migration Assistant to reinstall all applications, documents, etc from your Time Machine backup (just replace your userID with the one on Time Machine).

2 ways, if you have a USB stick handy, I'd download mavericks from the App Store and make a USB installer. This will be faster and helpful to have the key if you ever have to reinstall again.

    http://lifehacker.com/how-to-create-an-os-x-mavericks-usb-installation-drive-145 0280026

Or, hold down command + R doing a reboot to launch internet recovery.

On either method, make sure you open up disk utility to ensure your HD partition is just one mac journaled volume.

First use Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition.

CAUTION: This erases all your files! DO NOT do this step unless you have TWO Backups of all the User data you want to save!

Technically you have a Mac Pro 6,1 "Late 2013" there is no 2014, though there could of course be a "Mid 201x" or "Late 2014" some day.

When downloading t he installer package, ".ESD" instead of running it, save a copy on another drive, create a partition - anywhere, though most seem to use flash memory I used an old small 40GB SSD and also a small 16GB partition on a disk drive.

How to make your own bootable OS X 10.9 Mavericks USB install drive

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/how-to-make-your-own-bootable-os-x-10-9-mav ericks-usb-install-drive/

Apple has changed things in 10.9, but making a recovery drive is still possible.

As with Lion and Mountain Lion, it’s possible to create a local USB installer for Mavericks. The bad news is that it wasn’t as simple as it was before—Apple has changed the way the installer works, and making an install disk manually is more difficult than it used to be. Before we get started, here’s what you’ll need:

    • An 8GB or larger USB flash drive, or an 8GB or larger partition on some other kind of external drive

The OS X 10.9 Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store in your Applications folder. The installer will delete itself when you install the operating system, but it can be re-downloaded if necessary.

The latest beta of the Lion Diskmaker app, available here (as of this writing, version 3 beta 3 is the most recent). This app is free to download, but the creator accepts donations if you want to support his efforts.

An administrator account on the Mac you're using to create the disk.

Lion Diskmaker remains the easiest, most user-friendly way to get this done.

Look at my screen shot Verify your Boot Rom and SMC version. There is an EFI 2.0 update on Apples support site.

It does look like you have the latest firmware.

When a kernel panic occurs, the report is saved in a log and can be retrieved later. Try and find one and post it here. this article will help:

At this point of time, I am wondering if it is a hard issue or a software issue or both.

If it is hardware, then I want a replacement.

If software, then I think next step is to re-install OSX and try again.

Or wait for fix from Apple.

If after reinstalling and same thing happen.. what other options I have because I do not think Apple will refund my money....

You can only rule out software if you clean install the OSX so go for it.

Why will Apple not refund your money? You have 2 weeks from delivery unless you are already beyond that date? Even so, if you call and give them your history, I'm sure they would take a return.

If I were you, I'd clean install ASAP to rule out s/w. If hardware, I would put in for a replacement.
