Q: iPhone acts odd, crazy, touch screen, random behavior, while charging

This post only addresses iPhone acting up while charging and using the device.

Problem:

I have a cord and wall charger I take with me in my laptop case. It charges the iPhone fine, but... when I attempt to use the iPhone while it charges on this cord the touch sreen responds CRAZY, or RANDOM, like an invisible finger is pressing another area of the screen.

I can not consistantly or hardly OPEN the device by "slide to unlock" .... most of the time it actually ZOOMs in like the 3 Finger touch.

ONLY when I unplug the phone can I "slide to unlock"  and have normal use of phone.

Troubleshooting:

We have 5 Apple devices I tried all the Cords with all wall Plugs...

Solution:

Turns out that we some how have a Wall Plug that doesn' appear to be "Designed by Apple in CA"

All the other plugs either have an Apple Logo or state "Designed by Apple in CA"

...This one that doesn't work properly has the same model #'s and voltage written on the face, but says "Power Adapter made in China"

It Charges fine but, must have a grounding issue or something that causes the touch screen to respond Crazy & Odd.

I Marked this one with a sharpie marrker "X", we just use it to Charge as a last resort.

If you have similar issues this could be your best bet....test it yourself with another cord or wall plug.

iPod touch, Windows XP

    Hi

did you get amy answer on it?

unfortunately also my Iphone 5 started to have this random behaviour suddenly and independently by any charging

Quite worrying also because the random pattern looks not so random

After doing quite a lot of research on this issue -it happened suddenly just 2 days ago but spent quite lot of time to research and trying to solve it for safety reasons-i see there are not serious answers except a bit generic and more fanatics ones that are really inappropriate when an issue like this is becoming more common

tried to reset, restore, delete software, etc, : nothing happens, still same "random" behaviour

Really worrying, i have five Apple devices all connected and hope it does t spread to all of them

    Who could seriously help?

(Going to try Apple genius shop but feeling it ll be just time lost as it happened to read about  others with same issue)

With the next  iphone 6 launch, shouldn't this issue taken more seriusly?

If you read the post you responded to the OP solved it by stopping using a 3rd party charger ,now what a surprise

So they did not expect to get "any answer "

Believe it or not, last night an iphone charging with a generic non-apple charger, between 4:34 am and 4:58 am recorded 8 videos of darkness (the camera against the floor) and 6 pictures of the same darkness. And published one of the pictures in Instagram!!!! I'm absolutely not joking. I just realized that something was wrong with the iphone when it started playing a song at minimum volume.

I understand that electrical instability coming from AC and from a generic charger can act over the electrical sensors on the screen, yes I do understand, but there are a LOT of coordinated clicks to unlock the screen (no password), to record such amount of videos and pictures and to publish on Instagram!! And more, it should change the camera between Photo and Video and the camera was changed also from back to front camera! And what about playing music!! Scary.

Also the "non disturb" icon, the half moon, was switched on.

My wife says that there is a ghost at home!! : ))

    Hi,

I also ended up with the same behavior. It started about a week ago while p laying Solitaire a card game, the phone played the whole rest of the game that I was playing almost like someone was <<touching the screen>> instead of me.

When I updated to 8.0.2, it stopped for a while ( about 4 days) than started again this morning, I wanted to surf on the web for some site and, you should have seen it going, almost like if someone was surfing at MY phone remotely.

VERY worrisome TMO. EVER and I say EVER I will let a piece of technology dictate what where and how I am going to surf without my explicit consent EVER.

I surfed the web about this and even called APPLE CARE and, the obvious answer was almost like << REALLY ??????>>

No seriously Apple, not only the case could be bent like a sheet of cheap aluminium BUT now, your phone has an attitude on it's own   Really ?????

I am willing to push this '' ISSUE'' up to public attention in order to push the BIG APPLE CIE to a major review of these two issues ( Case and keyboard )

    without any further delay.

    Jacques

I admit to the fact that it is not an Apple genuine charger but beside the fact that it is supposed to ''supply '' 5 volts through the USB connector what else it is supposed to do, call the Ghosts around your toy to have fun on it ???????

When mine started to behave like that (weird keyboard acting) I was playing Solitaire and believe it or not, IT FINISHED THE GAME AND| I WON ( or IT WON ) should I way.

I suspect that there is a '' backdoor '' opened in the new IPhone 6 and THEY should look at it RIGHT NOW

It is good to see that I am not the only one getting this strange behaviour - like it is running a script.

Happening for me on an iPhone 5S and I did not think i had a charger that was not supplied by Apple. Have to see if there is a way of confirming it.

The keyboard script or whatever it is seems to burst into life when the phone gets to full charge or overcharged?

I'm getting something similar to what you're describing.  I've noticed that when my phone does move on its own, it is as if the screen is being pressed in the same spot repeatedly.

I've switched positions of the icons and the position seemed to be the culprit.  Today it was a different position. The new position is at the phone icon in the lower left corner.  The icon was selected then the contact in that position was called.

    Couple of things to note:

    • First and second occurrence the USB was connected to my laptop.  Third occurrence (this morning) phone was connected to a surge protector with the apple adapter and cable.
    • My phone is an iPhone 6 128
    • I have my phone in an Otterbox Defender case, which has a screen protector built in.

    Hope this helps.

I tried to find out if it is happening on a charger that is not genuine Apple charger but I cannot tell. The charger for the iPhone 5S looks like a real Apple Charger.

The problem only happens after the phone reaches Full Charge and pulling the cable out stops the spurious keyboard activity

I have looked at YouTube videos showing how to tell if a charger is not genuine but that did not help. I think it is a real UK Apple charger

    I have a similar issue:

    - iPhone 6 Plus. iOS 8.1.

    - original Lightning cable

    - connected to Mac book Pro Retina 13, late 2013.

-> when the phone is connected to the mac, the screen registers touches around the area where I am actually touching. Sometimes this only results in quirky scrolling, sometimes the phone is rendered unsuable (can't touch anywhere, or phone registers touches where I didn't).

--> I can pull the cable and the screen is responsive again. Once I connect it, the phone behaves the same. A reboot did not help.

Anyone with similar issues? This sounds like a hardware bug to me.. :/

    Best

    Hendrik

same here! no help, just suspect b-s like non-apple chargers etc. I had problems with my iphone 5 from the start, was told to erase and restore, did not help. thought os8 would help. nope! last night I watched helplessly as my own phone deleted an important email I was waiting for, unbelievable!

I've had this on an ipad and I'm 99% sure it's a faulty digitizer.

Sometimes links wouldn't work, sometimes apps would open and do things by themselves.

After some careful observation however, for me it was apps in a line across the middle, and spinning the ipad around I could see it was differnet apps but in the same places on the screen.

Similarly, links that didn't work or letters that seemed to be stuck, spinning it round they would work or it would be different letter.

I replaced the digitizer and fixed the problem. The home button was replaced too so I can't discount that it might have had something to do with it as it felt unresponsive.

I can't possibly say if you have the same thing of course, but that was my experience.

    Regards

Finally! Others having the same issue as me. When I got my 6 Plus 128 it started doing what you describe. I even managed to do a screen recording via an app on my PC. AT&T exchanged my unit after a senior Apple rep referred me to them (I live in Puerto Rico and there are no Apple stores).

This unit just started to do the same randomly. I did notice, however, that the anomaly occurred while connected to the cable. This makes me conclude the lightning socket may be interferring with the screen or touch sensor/digitizer.

If anyone is interested in the short video I managed to record, let me know. I could email it.

For me it only happens with one specific charger and I am sure it is a Genuine Apple one
