Q: Home Sharing on Apple TV keeps disconnecting

My apple tv just recently stopped recognizing that my home sharing is turned on.  I can watch a full movie from my iTunes, but when it finishes, it goes to the home menu and when i go to the Computer app, it says to turn on Home Sharing.  Home Sharing is turned "ON" on my itunes on my computer, so i'm not sure why Apple TV doesn't recognize it, even when it clearly recoginized it as turned on 2 hours prior.

This started happening after i updated the Mavericks OS to the version 10.9.2 and itunes to version 11.1.5.  The only fix i have is to turn "off" home sharing in iTunes then to turn it back "on."  This seems to fix it in the meantime, but after another movie, it happens all over again.

Does anyone else have this issue?  It's pretty annoying to have to keep turning off then back on Home Sharing on my itunes.

Apple TV (3rd generation), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iTunes (11.1.5)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm curious tho how restarting my router would affect the home sharing setting?

I have experienced this too with my ATV2 and ATV3. It keeps losing Home Sharing and also disappears from Airplay on my MBPro and iPad. Its only come up since the recent OSX and iOS updates.

Got a home hub 2 and atv 2 the atv stops playing ie occassionally stops caching. I thought it was the atv but suspecting the home hub because daughter has a hh 4 and atv 3 and it's doing the same, the only fix is too reboot the router. It always seems to stop at around 1 1/2 hours into a movie, mine is over ethernet hers is on wi-fi, and this is streaming movies on the hd via itunes.

Ive attempted to watch 3-4 films now over a wired connection and its kicked every one off around 40 mins in! cant get it to restart at all. so i revert to dropping the file onto a USB stick straight into the back of the tv and no problems so it makes attempting to watch a film over the Atv not worth the hassel.

ive just spent 2k on this kit and it seems £300-400 on a home build PC might have been a better option.

several calls to Apple tech and im left feeling like im blowing in the wind!

it could very well be down to the BT Hub but my Pc managed ok!

    very dissapointed so far!

I thought it was the ATV too but now I'm not so sure. The next time it happens I'm going to leave the atv, normally I restart it, and restart the home hub. It may or may not prove anything but we will see.

I've recently had BT infinity2 installed and that was a joke! 2 engineer visits later and I'm still not seeing speeds above the top end of infinty1, I monitored the line very closely for the first few weeks and noticed a lot of sudden drop outs, got to a point were bt claimed they couldn't do any more and offered a deadlock however that's no good to me as it's quite rural here and there is no other provider!

Not that this would effect the ATV but I have had concerns over the quialty of the hub!!

I might call Bt and get there tech people to look into the possibility of it glitching ?

I know they can look at fault logs and see if it shows up anything?

Between us we have 3 bt hub set ups with Apple TV and all are encountering the same issue?

    A bit coincidental?

I can't complain about my speed I think my infinty 2 is very close to the top end of the spec.

Although I'm in the suburbs and not far from a cabinet.

I definitely think the HH has major problems.

My daughter is switching to sky ISP shortly along with changing her router so I'll post any changes in performance of the atv. If she has no trouble we can surely point the finger at the HH.

I don't think its the HH as I'm on a D-Link router (with less than great Gibraltar broadband speeds! )

Steven. it will be interesting to see what results your daughter sees?

Devil, you encounter the same drop outs half way threw films ? but using a different router ?

Does the computer where your iTunes library is on go to sleep?

I had this with previous versions, it looked like the home sharing was lost when the computer gets to sleep.

No, my computer isn't set to go to sleep. Which is why it's so annoying that home sharing would disconnect on my Apple TV when in iTunes it's still on.

Yes, I know it is very annoying. I myself am streaming movies from my NAS now because of this. I tried numerous suggestions from these and other forums to solve the home sharing problem but nothing worked so far.

As an alternative: I could also get home sharing to work again by turning it off and back on on my Apple TV. That's also annoying but saves a walk to the computer upstairs
