Q: 10.9.2 upgrade "breaks" the camera

After upgrading to 10.9.2, FaceTime, PhotoBooth, and Skype no longer can find the built in iSight camera on my iMac. They all ask me to install a camera.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), intel 3.02 Ghz, 24" screen

    I have the same issue.  I was able to successfully have a Skype session the day prior to upgrading.  I upgraded to 10.9.2 and now the camera cannot be found in any of the applications (Skype, Facetime, Photobooth.....)

    I tried to do a new upgrade--same issues.

    Is this an upgrade issue?  Do I need to do a restore from TimeMachine prior to the upgrade?  Help.

    Look at this thead:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5939338?start=0&tstart=0

    Basically if you have any 3rd party applications that create a virtual display they cause a core process to crash which is required to make the camera work.

    Air Display, Air Parrot, DisplayLink drivers, iDisplay and the Splashtop drivers have all been found to cause problems. Remove them if you have them and reboot. It doesn't always work immediately (i.e. have patience if it doesn't work straight away because it can take up to 20 minutes before your mac cleans up the resulting mess). And you may have to start Skype up to kick off the clean up process. Most people have got it to work without downgrading.

    I delete all apps mentioned above,Airdisplay, Airparrot, iDisplay, and didn't work.

    Before a clean install (i really need one), but is a pain to me reinstall everything.... I thought I should try one more thing.

    Than I remove VMWARE and PARALLELS. (only the app, not the virtual machine - keep the machine until appear a solution...)

    Solved! Everything back to normal. iSight back to FaceTime and Skype.

    Is a try to people who already try everything.

    It's highly unlikely that Parallels or VMware actually caused the problem. Instead, what I think is happening is that the act of installing/uninstalling those programs "touches" the Extensions folders -- triggering OS X to notice that the offending Air Display, AirParrot, and iDisplay drivers are now gone. I am basically 99.999% sure that you can reinstall VMware and Parallels and the iSight will continue to work. (It does for me, I have Parallels and it's working fine. AirParrot was the culprit in my case.)

    Hei support@avatron.com

    PROBLEM

    =========

    After upgrading to maverick 10.9.2 my camera stopped working on my iMac and on my MacBookPro.

    First I suspected that it was the maverick upgrade, which was the problem.

    After spending several days with searching on the internet and trying all the different suggestions.

    Which included re-format hard disk, re-install Maverick again, safe boot, removing old *.kext files, repair disk, check disk with permissions etc. etc. (waste of time)

    I phoned apple support, but supporter said that it was a non apple App which caused the problem.

    Then I say somebody saying that the AirDisplay was the problem.

    SOLUTION

    ==========

    I finally found out that:

    By uninstalling the AirDisplay solved the problem, and now the camera works again.

    Here is the link  how to uninstall AirDisplay:

    PLEASE Avatron

    ==============

    When do Avatron have a fix for this particular problem. No update was available today when I tried.

    Are Avatron working on the problem?

    A lot of people have this problem with AirDisplay and Maverick Update 10.9.2 !!!!!

    search google

    maverick 10.9.2 facetime camera air display not working

    This is the response from AirDisplay ==>>>

    Hello,

    My apologies for this issue. It's a bug we are aware of. It stems from an issue with OS X. Certain Macs that have a third party video driver installed will exhibit this issue. So, it's not just Air Display that causes this problem but other apps like Display Link, AirParrot, etc. will also have this issue. Apple has contacted us regarding the problem and they're looking into it. It's not actually something we or those other third party developers can fix. Apple has to address the issue with OS X. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.
