Q: 2010 macBook pro 15". Lagging and froze during last update.

Hi guys, 2 months ago I had my hinge replaced under warrenty because of a faulty glue joint. When I got the computer back I noticed a slight grinding in the body while runnung (hard drive?). It got better so I let it go, this morning I performed a software update and it froze during the validation process so I had to power off by holding the power button. I found a past tip that led me to find the folder with the update and I put the content of the folder in the trash. I did an update again and it said I was up to date.

I want to cure my lagging and freezing, need some help! as you can tell by my user name I am better with wood, not computers so please keep your recommendations in "newbie" terms. Thanks for your help!

I'm gonna run out of gas for the day pretty soon. It's been a long one.

We may be sniffing glue before this is over.

    Problem,

disk utility cannot repair this disk. Back upas many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

OK... that means the drive has problems. A reformat might fix it, but it'll wipe everything on the drive. If you want to try to reinstall, copy off any files you want to save to your external drive then just follow all the steps in this link. Keep in mind if you do this you're going to end up with the computer as it came out of the box. Any apps you purchased are going to be gone and will need reinstallation.

OK, I am going to call it a night! I will attempt this reformat either tomorrow or wednesday, I will check in and see if you are still alive before attempting this. There is no rush for me as my other computer is completely functional. I transfered most of my important files to drop box, and will transfer anything else before i try the re-format.

My iPhoto library is on my external hard drive and I will make sure I can retrieve them from my other computer BEFORE we reformat.

Good night and thanks again for your patience and help!

You're welcome. If you try the format and reinstall and it fails, you need a new drive. Either another HD or an SSD.

    Morning BobRz,

Ok, now when i open my computer (without theinstallation disk) I have a perpetual white/grey screen with the apple logo and the laoding spinning wheel. Is there no way for me to access the computer or is it dead because of the failed reinstall from last night? I will wait for your response but I will start reading your steps to take to reformat the HD.

    Yep, probably the failed install.

If you don't care about the data, follow the steps to reformat. If you do, decide whether you want an SSD or an HD and order that as well as the enclosure.

the backups that I have on my external hard drive are still valid right? So after I reinstall the HD (and presumably everything goes as planned)  if I plug in the external hard drive my backups will still be there for me to use if needed right? I know at least my photos are safely on my external hard drive.

As far as I know, you haven't done anything with your external so nothing should be different. As of last night though, you said it was just your photos on there not any backups.

There were a few backups that I did perform during the last couple of months, they are on the external hard drive. Also, all my iPhoto is on the external hard drive.

If they're there, you'll see an option to restore from an external drive during the install process. Plug in your drive at that point and choose it as the source to recover from.

IT WORKED!!!!  Now if I was to do a disk utility again and checked the hard drive it would probably say that it is still still broken right?? I verified the Mac HD and it says it appears to be OK.

The next time I have a pop up for a software update will I be setting myself up for the same problems???
