Q: Airplay mirroring broke in 10.9.2

i just updated to 10.9.2 and now when i try and airplay mirror to my Apple TV, it sends the audio but just shows a black screen and i can't drag anything to it. It doesn't show any of the options for external displays in the displays section of System Preferences.

Any ideas? i tried reapplying the combo update with no luck

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

to: DJEmergencyThere are  "3" people with the issue, 4972 views on this (people get bored in weekends looking for issues) and we are all Apple haters owning Apple machines. The fact is that after the 10.9.2 update airplay just got broken. It is just plane and simple with no consiparcy theory.

Some more details of how you uninstalled AirDisplay would be appreciated.

There are others on this forum who could benefit from some more information.

I did a Spotlight search for AirDisplay, and it found AirDisplay Uninstaller. I ran that, and that's it. All good.

Except it does not fix the problem for those like me who have never used Squirrel or Airparrot or any other animal to mirror to another device.

Airplay mirroring is broken on my 2008 Macbook Pro and my 2013 27" iMac. It broke on both as soon as I installed 10.9.2. Nothing else changed.

That is simply not true. I had never heard of Airparrot before looking at these threads and my mirroring is dead.

    Ah ha.

So in addition the removal process for the AirParrot kexts, people still experiencing the issue should also look to remove AirDisplay components. According to the uninstaller script provided by AirDisplay, the responsible kexts for causing the issues are:

    /System/Library/Extensions/AVFrameBuffer.kext

    /System/Library/Extensions/AVVideoCard.kext

You can (and should) run the uninstaller to cleanly clear any components from AirDisplay that are left, but to verify you can run these commands in Terminal yourself:

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVFrameBuffer.kext

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVVideoCard.kext

    Restart and then try again.

When Joseph Rose showed all of his kexts a few pages back, these two were installed... which is why he was still experiencing the issue. Now that we know what they are, we can remove them.

Just did a system restore & update to the AppleTV - making sure its all up to date.

My MacBook Pro Retina is all up to date. It worked for about 10secs, then disconnected me & wont let me connect to appleTV again. Still broken. Ive never had airdisplay or airparrot installed.

I also noticed, that when it disconnects if you use the remote for the AppleTV is has gone off the network e.g. going to trailers/TV/etc time-out. Someone else might want to confirm if this is the same for them.

I can see things like the following on the console of the macbook

    This worked for me.

Joseph Rose's solution finally fixed Airplay for me.  I now have mirroring and extended Airplay functions again.  It was a long road, but in the end, removing Air Parrot and Air Display was the solution for me.

    Solution:

Ran the Air Display uninstaller that I found by searching in spotlight.

Ran the Air Parrot removal tool & confirmed that the files were deleted based on instructions from their website.

Thanks to all that participated and spent their valuable time offering assistance!

The AirServer-uninstaller and removing all files of AirParrot did not work for me, but manually deleting the following extentions and rebooting were finally the solution!!!

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVFrameBuffer.kext

    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AVVideoCard.kext

all fine again! (so 3rd party caused issues with the update not the update itselfe!)

Remove any third party streaming service, both audio and visual: Airfoil, Airspeakers, Airserver, everything.
I'm running a 2009 MBP so was worried that this was an issue that wasn't as easily fixed on older systems, but when I went through my programs I found an old copy of Airfoil sitting there. Use something like AppZapper to get rid of the applications you find if they don't come with an uninstaller (like Airparrot), and run the above commands via terminal and you should be golden. Still not working? You've likely missed something somewhere.

I couldn't even use iTunes airplay, or connect to the MBP via NitoTV media player (ATV2), but now all of that has been resolved.

That is exact my problem too!

Since last update of my IMAC.

Good to know that I am not the only one. Apple should fix the problem. Who is asking them?
