Q: Plug in failure in Safari

After updating Adobe Flash Player version 12, I can't upload photos on Facebook due to an error message that reads 'plug in failure'.

Ive uninstalled flash anddeleted all the old versions and reinstalled everything and it still reads 'plugin failure.'

How do I solve this?

Thank you

The back up disk has space now. I reformated it.

However, it shows that 150 GB is taking up to 15 days to back up. That can't be right?

This situation seems to be getting out of control. We started with a plugin crash, then you couldn't back up, and now the system won't boot? What happens when you try? Do you have a backup?

I have a back up of my important files (Pics, vids, apps, docs). Not a time machine back up.

The  plug in was the initial problem. It was accompanied by the restaring problem and the loud fan. The fan seems to be better. When I restart it goes to a gray screen with a little circle at the center bottom of the screen. That's all. It wont completely reboot- I have waited 15 minutes.  I have to hold down the power button to shut down and restart. When the computer starts again old screens open e.g calender - even after I closed it.

The back up disk was showing full(even though it was empty)  so I couldn't use time machine.

I reformatted the disk. It's now empty. I still cant back up cause it's says it will take days to finish. eg 15 days to back up 150 GB. Something is wrong there.

I tried the intructions to help the plug in failure. restarted (with a problem) and the plug in failure is still present.

    What now?

I don't understand what you mean by "the computer still wont restart."

When I click restart. all the windows close and the computer begins to restart.  it then goes to a gray screen with a small moving circle. Like it's loading. That's all it does. I have waited for a long time for the gray screen to turn into the login screen with the password box and it doesnt come up. I then press the power button to force shut down.

You've got to complete a backup before doing anything else. The last backup attempt failed because you were on battery power with a low battery. Please connect the AC adapter and try again.

If the backup is still stuck, start up in safe mode and try again. If you still can't back up, see below.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.

    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”

    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

The system is so heavily modified that, instead of trying to remove the modifications piecemeal, you should erase the startup volume, reinstall OS X, and then go through the initial setup process, restoring only user data and settings from a backup — not applications or other files. This procedure will be easier than trying to clean up a messy system.

Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.

Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups. If you upgraded from an older version of OS X, you'll need the Apple ID and password that you used, so make a note of those before you begin.

When you restart, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process in Setup Assistant. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup.

Select only users and Computer & Network Settings in the Setup Assistant dialog — not Applications or Other files and folders. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.

    After that, run Software Update.

If the problem is resolved after the clean installation, reinstall third-party software selectively. I can only suggest general guidelines. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are usually safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.

I strongly recommend that you never reinstall "utilities" such as the Seagate software, if they're packaged as an installer.

Before installing any software, ask yourself the question: "Am I sure I know how to uninstall this without having to wipe the volume again?" If the answer is "no," stop.

Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
