The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows
iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage
- A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10 or higher. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later.
- A 3G to 5.1.1 Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
- A 4G to 6.1.6 Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. For a Mac, that requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later
- A 5G to iOS 7.0.6. Requires iTunes 11.1 or later if you update via iTunes
I suspect yoi have the 1G (original iPod touch) It is a 1G if it does not have an internal speaker and nt volume buttons on upperleft edge.
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

Mar 7, 2014 10:38 PM in response to ali_ghanizadaby Skausalik,I have a 1st Gen that has 3.1.3 (7E18) listed as the software version and I cannot for the life of me connect to my wifi or my phones hot spot with it. I used to be able to no problem... Itunes says I have the up to date version. It has been packed away for about 2 years so I tried to update it via Itunes and it still is not working... I reset my router I took off all my security and tried I wiped the ipod and did soft boot... nothing seems to be working... do I have to buy the update... if so that is lame sauce... i have seen a lot of others complaining that the 3.1.3 killed the wifi... how to i roll back or go past (freely if possible) to get my wifi... it sees the network but when i try to connect it says "unable to"

Mar 8, 2014 2:08 AM in response to Skausalikby lllaass,If not this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device. Not clear what restore you did
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Mar 8, 2014 10:26 AM in response to lllaassby Skausalik, hesitant to put it in the freezer for condinsation reasons..
the Ipod touch first gen does not have airplane modesNo it is not connecting to anything at all
Yes it sees networks it just will not connect
Errors "Unable to connect to (network name)
No other devices to connect i.e. bluetooth (I dont believe it is even compatable with that)
Yes it used to connect before we moved from CO to AZ and it sat in climate controlled storage for a year
I reset it using the power button and circle button, Itunes back up, software update, restore, reset to factory settings
I used the wifi networks and connections troubleshooting... it was aimed more for phones and less for the Ipod I have
My router is set to accept all 802. I even took down all passwords and left it completely unsecured while trying to connect the ipod
none of that worked...
WHAT FINALLY WORKED
I found a post saying the wifi antenna might be going bad and to place it super close to the broadcasting router... I laid it on top of the router and was able to sign in... walking away from the router I heald the lock on the network for about 2 minutes in that time frame the battery went from FULL charge to 20%
which... seems to be part of the 3.1.3 OS doings... from what I have read... the way Apple killed the first gen so you had to go buy a new gen... LAME
