Q: iPhone5s and MacBook pro via usb

When I try to connect iTunes with iPhone5s via usb - the phone prompts no connection -try using wifi or dataroaming...Still I am able to sync the phone normally? something wrong in the phone settings? one would think that when the phone is connected via usb that would be the best way to setup apps?
