Q: "File could not open because you do not have permission to view it."

Hey everyone,

I have a PDF document that is linked to another and so on (it's a school textbook)

I can open the document, but when I click on the hyperlink, which usually opens another window for a seperate PDF, it's says "The file could not open because you do not have permission to view it." and then instructs me "To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info."

I did this and all the permissions are Read and Write and the other option is Read Only.

Any ideas?

Thanks, M

Yep - totally agree.  My 'conversion' to Mac has been plaqued with probems.  The permissions one is top of my list.  Disgraceful - Apple don't seem to care - at all.

    An expensive mistake.

Two things... why can't Apple answer these questions rather than any number of people who don't really know giving their SUGGESTION about what might solve the problem (caused by Apple)!? It seems better to me if people who actually know the answer or are responsible for the faulty code should reply.

Because this is a free USER forum. You didn't buy technical support (and if your mac is still under warranty, then take it to Apple).

Lots of stupid problems since I bought this MacBook Pro a few months ago. Much better than a PC... much better than a PC... the Apple girl said in the shop. Now I know the truth.

And yet I, and I would hazard a guess most other users of Apple OS X, have never experienced this problem. That's curious if it s a programming error. More likely down to user ignorance than software malfunction.

You're easily impressed. This thread's been going for how many years, and there's like SEVEN people who've said they've got the same problem in all that time. How many users of OS X do you think there are? Do the math.

Where did I apologise or make excuses for Apple. This is a USER forum. Use your eyes. Apple don't post here. You want feedback from Apple go to an Apple store or contact the company. Don't come on a user forum and start whining at us.

    Hey guys,

I've upgraded my MBP to OS X Mavericks. It solves all the issues.

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.

Hold down the option key and select Go Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:

    • Caches/com.apple.Preview
    • Containers/com.apple.Preview
    • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
    • Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState

    Launch the application and test.
