Q: iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

This is not a cable issue.  It is software and can be fixed.  Several of us further up this thread figured it out.  By the way, I had this problem for less than 10 hours before iOS 7.0.6.  It mysteriously disappeared but rebooting the phone didn't seem to be the solution.  Such software bugs can be a ***** to find but Apple should remove the 'feature' entirely at this point.

This 'protection' may have been coded into iOS after some cheap Chinese products caused iPhone fires and Apple was sued.  Unfortunately some people have to jump to the conclusion that this is all about Apple greed.  They have a practical solution to a known problem but there is a bug.  I'm very disappointed that they haven't solved it sooner.

This does not impact other Apple products.  Our MacBook Pro and Air are still vastly better for business and personal productivity than Windows.

I didn't - I had to claim a new phone on my bank insurance as apple and O2 blamed each other and after 3 weeks I got totally red up!

Just an update on what I now describe as my cider store, Apple in melt down

Good news, Apple TV now restored with the help of yet another cable ...

MinMac Server .. went through reinstallation of OS procedure but turns out there is a disk failure. Second time the machine has crashed.

Time Capsule wireless connection has gone again. Aerial may be failing but that follows an update, which leads me to a recnetly replaced 4S.

There's a thread about the wifi failing following an earlier IOS update

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5499447?start=45&tstart=0

The phone is residing in the freezer as I type. Whether this cures the problem will be interesting but no more than that. I wanted to sell the phone anyway.

All of these will be heading for Apple and then eBay shortly. Welcome sonus and other streaming devices. iTunes will live on for a while but Napster and Spotify will soon repalce them and I'd also quite like shares in Netflix/Amazon.

Sad thing is I still think Apple computers remain ahead of Windows. 8 is torrid without a touch screen and there are still things that are far easier on a Mac. However, if my iPhone 5 was a car, I could send it back.

    And I don't like cider ...

Now, would you believe it, I've just extracted the iPhone 4S from the freezer and restarted it. Hey presto, wifi. We now wait for the reset to finish ... all seemed fine but it froze oh of course, no Sim. Oh well.

Anyone know where I can get a SIM carrier, I've lost it

@tflab  This has been going since well before the 7.0.6 upgrade.  Look at the dates of earlier posts?

    Hi sdawson36,

I am facing the same as you. Bought an iPhone at Singtel Bugis Store 4 months ago and now my iPhone will not charge anymore.

Despite all tips & tricks I read on the internet, it seems that my iPhone decided to keep empty :-(

What did you do regarding Singtel? I am going to visit the Singtel Store tomorrow, but I am afraid that they will advice me to contact Apple Support, which probably will not solve my problem. If I may believe the other stories.

And btw, I've always used original Apple cables and chargers. So it's strange that I got several messages "not certified..." and somehow I am not allowed to charge anymore.

    Hope to hear from you!

Join the club! Apple is just ignoring this. There is a real problem and they don't even pretend the problem exists.

I love Apple products and I own them all, but when something stupid like this happens they do nothing to help.

They did nothing for me and I had to claim a new phone on my insurance :-( If this had been any other company it would have been all over the World press!! Apple products are no longer cutting edge and the likes of HTC and Samsung are far ahead - I suspect when my contract is up I'll be switching as I'm not paying over the odds for inferior products :-(

I find it so ironic that some have a problem with a single product (that may or may not be the manufacturer's fault - ie - use cheap cables and complain that they don't work with their expensive product, or a bug that only affects a handful of millions of users/owners), and then somehow translate that to mean that an entire company's product line is nothing but junk and are supposedly willing to dump $thousands in hardware because of one issue.

I particularly find the post that begins by harping on the iPhone 5s cable issue, then morphs to compalining about their AppleTV, MacMini Server, and MacBook - all supposedly having some kind of coordinated meltdown...

I have done my fair share of Apple-bashing over the years when they mess up (and any company, just like an individual human being) is going to make mistakes.  The reality is - Apple makes far fewer mistakes than most in their industry.  Can they be somewhat controling of their devices and software?  Certainly - but that is also part of why their "stuff" tends to be less problematic overall.  It is the price one pays.

And - as if I ever need a reminder about why I primarily live in/use an Apple "ecosystem" - I also carry around an ASUS MeMO Pad HD7 Android-based tablet.  I have had all sorts of issues, primarily software (though not all).  Android is a "free-for-all" atmosphere - that opens doors to malicious software, to all sorts of conflicts in software, and in many ways is rather unstable and unreliable.  And don't even start on the horrid memory management in Android...    And as far as Windows is concerned - I am tasked with keeping several family members up-and-running - and they are hard-headed Windows users - who cannot seem to figure out that they should NOT click every window that pops up askign them to install garbage, or to open every single file that comes through email... I spend more than a half-hour or so, even on a realtively well-running Windows machine, and I am ready to run and bash my head into a brick wall.  I have chased driver issues, connection issues, and all types of file corruption problems...  DLL's and so much more.  I am so ready to get back to my MacBook Pro.

Oh - and back a few months ago, I was in the closest Apple Store and one of the "friendly" Apple folks walked up to offer assistance.  I said I was just in to look - they stayed for a moment.  So I asked if they knew anything about the "not certified" issue with iPhone 5 and 5s.  They were aware of it - said a handful of folks had come in with the issue - and they had replaced a few phones because of it.  This person said that most cases were complaints regarding 3rd Party cables...

Well said... thanks for offereing a level headed opinion to an issue that has morphed into way more than a cable issue.

I'm having the exact same issue. I've bought three different charging cords for my iPhone 5, none of which work longer than a day. This is ridiculous and such a money grab. The prices if the apple charge cords should be lowered so they wouldn't have the problem if people seeking out cheaper alternatives in the first place. Not very customer friendly if the customers are wasting their money on any brand that isn't apple, it's also creating lots more pollution having so many useless electronics now. Very unimpressed, hopefully they change this.

They won't. It is for your protection. Cheap knockoff chargers can be a fire or electrocution risk. For all the money you spent on the three different charging cords, you probably could have purchased one certified Apple cord and be done with this. As it is, if you continue to purchase cheap cords, you will continue to have problems.

    Cheers,
