Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

Now I wonder how long it will take before Apple officially fixes the bug that crippled Mavericks' Finder.

Probably when they find it is a common problem and not just experienced by a few.

I have uploaded a newer version of TheLostFinderNewWindow plugin.  It's available at the same location as before.  (Just click on the same link you see in the email you received before)

Not only does it fix opening folders by double clicking or command+O, you can now also drag items into folders and they will open a new window as they did in previous versions of OS X.  Opening folders using the Go menu has also been fixed up.  (If you don't know what I'm talking about, you'll know what I'm talking about if you live with the older version of the plugin for a little longer)

Anyone who got the download link previously can redistribute the DMG package anywhere on the web, as long as you include a link to my website.  You can find a link to my website inside the DMG package.  (You cannot redistribute the plugin alone, redistribution must be the entire DMG package)

I will no longer update on this thread.  Any updates to the plugin will be on my website.  You can find a link to my website in the DMG package.

And wow!  Apple just deleted another one of my posts.  So I don't expect this to be here much longer.  Obviously they don't want us to open folders in new windows anymore.

It might be better received if you  link to a page describing a possible work-round for this, rather than directly to the software ?.

    http://siggi.hk/index.php?action=TheLostFinderNewWindow

(adding the information in 'How To Install' to that page could also be helpful.)

Some will be wary in any case, since SIMBL is often cited in crashes & instability problems here.

Do you have any plugs or help for the IOS7 mess.

I mean, no landscape mode music vids.

Custom labels in contacts alphabetical order. Etc?

    Thanks for the fix.

I downloaded the newer version and it doesn't fix spring loaded folders. They still open in the same window.

The go to folder command works properly.

One other tweak you could do that Command-Shift-A and Command-Shift-H for the Applications and Home folders respectively still open in the same folder.

For some reason, the spring loaded folders works perfectly fine for me.

    Try this in a Terminal:

    killall Finder

Finder will quit, and reopen.  Sometimes it doesn't reopen, so you just manually open it again by clicking on it in the dock.

See if that solves the problem.

The windows mac swapover seems to be going pretty quick.

Mac started out brilliantly simple functional.

Windows not. Remember backing out of a folder and it did not show where you came from?

Windows now appears to be getting better and better.

Apple seems to be heading for the way windows was.

We have a PC for the first time in our house and i am surprised to say its working now.

If all this weird Apple stuff continues i think they might be losing a few customers.

I wish it was not like this but something very very odd is going on.

I hope Apple are going to turn all this mess around.

    Thank you again

but I don't notice any change in your new version.

Means, I cannot open folders from the Go to - menu in new windows and spring-loaded folders don't open in new windows either.

The original SIMBL is not fully compatible with Mavericks.  If you're currently using the original SIMBL, try using EasySIMBL instead, the newer EasySIMBL is compatible.

I DO use EasySIMBL, otherwise couldn't have gotten your SIMBL plugin to work at all!

But I don't see any difference in the version that I can download from your website now and the version I have on my Mac already.

Oh, I forgot to upload the new version, that's why you were getting the old version without the fixes.

My apologies.  You can use the same link again to get the latest version.

Hey, may I make a "humble" request?

Would it be possible to include the behavior that double-clicking while holding option key opens the folder in a new window and closes the one before at the same time?

That would be really cool, really original and even more OS "classic" like than what Mountain Lion had.

Because there's no point for pressing option key leading to reverting back to "open in same window".

Thank you in advance once again!

Just installed the Plugin here and it seems to be working great!

That is "half" the solution to the main problem. I agree... there are MANY times that I use the OPTION key to dismiss the "current open folder window only" when double-clicking to open a new folder.

As far back as I can remember, I have never used the COMMAND KEY for anything when double-clicking folders. I either Double-clicked a folder to continue opening new windows leaving an open trail (which this plugin now reintroduces) OR I OPTION+Double-Clicked a folder when I wanted the "Previous Folder/Window Only" to disappear (but leaving any previous drill down windows open so I could go back and branch off if needed).
