I am very grateful for your willingness to help fellow FCE users. I had generally migrated to iMovie for my occasional projects. But I have just purchased a Thunder Bay IV RAID solution from OWC because I planned to use FCE to turn 30 years of family video into digital movies for my adult children. Since I would be working with everything from VHS to Hi-8 to Digital-8 to AVCHD, I wanted to used my FCE (I certainly didn't want to drop $300 on Final Cut Pro). When I couldn't figure a way to acquire 4.0.1, I stumbled onto this thread. Your solution has worked great.

    Again, thank you!

Paging Mr. Hoffmann, would you be so kinds as to share that link one more time? If you would I would gladly repay you by also offering to pass it along to anyone needs it in the future so you aren't constantly bugged about it. Thanks in advance.

I seem to be in the same boat - have just eBay-purchased a new copy of the FCE 3.5-to-4.0 Upgrade for my late 2007 MBP now running Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I'm trying to maintain access to my 6 years of work in FCE 3.5, & would also like to leave my tape-based camcorder behind for a Canon G20, which can provide AVCHD or MPEG footage in a number of resolutions.

From what I've read, I will thus need to update to FCE 4.0.1, which may not be a problem since I'm in Snow Leopard and not Mavericks, but might as well be prepared for the worst!  Tried downloading the link from your post just to get a look at it before I embark on the upgrade and subsequent update. I got an error message that Windows could not open the file.  Your post said that the link would only be good for 24 hours, and that was about three months ago.  Also, I downloaded it to a Win7 PC - might it open on my Mac?

I will try the "sudo software update" approach and if necessary other options noted in this discussion, but would really appreciate access to whatever was in your lockbox for 24 hours last November.  Apple has painted me into a corner on this one!  \

    Thanks, Sharron

Why would you download an Apple app onto a Windows machine?

It should work if you copy the file to your Mac.

Hey Ian - I just wanted to get a look at the link provided by Mr. Hoffman to such good effect for others.  Wasn't planning to run it on the PC - thought it might include something I could read in English as a kind of head start.

    Silly me.

The Mac is up in the mountains without much broadband and doesn't travel a lot these days - I need to baby it! But if the updater I downloaded will copy from the PC to the Mac, that will save me a longish download, so thanks for the suggestion - and the reassurance.  I am still hoping I won't need it, though.

Everything went so well, it was almost boring:  upgraded to FCE 4.0 with the brand-new 2007 disc from eBay, and then (after checking out my new FCE a little) went all the way to 4.0.1 using plain vanilla Software Update.  Took all of five minutes.

I think it's because I'm running Snow Leopard.  Kind of like living in the past..."somewhere in time..."

Time to check into using this setup with a Canon G20

    Thanks for your input, Ian!

You are probably correct about SL.

On Saturday I installed FCE 4 on my Mavericks powered iMac but there was no sign of any update, no matter what I tried.

Luckily I had saved the 4.0.1 update from years ago.

Today I tried to open Aperture 3.5 but it refused.

A google search quickly revealed that the installing of FCE 4 can kill off Aperture 3.5 and the usual "cure" is to completely reinstall the OS X operating system.

    You have been warned!
