Q: Issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011

I am wondering if anybody else is having issues with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics card on MBP 15" Early 2011?

It seems that when the Intel graphics card is in use all is ok, but when the AMD switches on the fans kick on and the MBP starts to get really hot, then the video fails with various issues ranging from a split screen, pinstripe lines, black screen, etc. All I can do is power off. Then, even after cooling down, it might take overnight before I can power it back on and have a working computer. Resetting SMC, PRAM, NVRAM, etc. is of no help. I can't get it to go into safe mode at all. I can't even get it to boot off the OSx install disk until I wait 8 - 12 hours. I swapped hard drives and reseatted the RAM, but my diagnostics say all is ok. I also took it to the genius bar and their diagnostics show no issues as well, but the tech says it is a failing video card and Apple will replace it for $310.

A few questions I have are:

Is this another NVidia-type of issue that will eventually result in a lawsuit?

I thought the video card was built into the logic board, if so, does that mean the logic board will be replaced?

Is $310 a fair charge for this repair?

Should I have purchased AppleCare when I had a chance? I thought spending $2000+ for a MBP would be better than the sub $500 laptops at malwart and other places.

    MacBook Model :

    - MBP. 15-inch, Early 2011.

    - Model Name: MacBook Pro

    - Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2

    - Processor 2.0 GHz Intel Core i7

    - Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Serial Number (If you can provide): C02FLAMEDF8V

    Country or Region: USA

Details: GPU malfunction. The computer started overheating for any usage. Then last time I tried to use another screen it started glitching and gave me the blue screen with vertical lines. I am in a Mac Store right now and just registered the problem. They want to charge me $310, flat rate to fix any problems in my computer. I want to see if we can get the recall.

The problem is too recurrent to be a sporadic or malfunction in one or other MBP. 3 years it is too little for such an investment (around $2,000). A MBP should give at least 5 years with moderate usage. I have MBP working for 7, 8 years after a lot of bumps on the road (kids, falling, even the hard drive still works perfectly... just changing the battery and works like new! – with a lot of dings! ! LOL).

Im having the same problems as everyone else.

How ever my problems started with my computer starting to become extremely slow about a year ago. Especially when handling video or pictures.

Three days ago i started getting a distorted picture but could resolve it by rebooting.

Yesterday I had been using the computer doing a presentation for potential businesspartners and when I came home and was gonna send an email I noticed that the computer had shut down. When I tried to reboot it wouldnt. After a nights sleep I finally managed to restart the computer but experienced several chrashes. About every 10th time that i try to start my MBP I actually can.

Now I have formated my hd and re-installed OSX 10.6.8

And it is working ok as long as I dont try to watch a movie or open iPhoto or similar that needs the Radeon card because it causes a crash.

This should come natural for Apple to fix, the same way they fixed the problems with the Nvidia chip.

Machine bought in sweden late 2011. Im currently living in Thailand and we dont have a Apple store on this island. Only certified retailers.

    I'm having the same problem.

    AMD Radeon HD 6490M ** - ** 2011

A week ago when trying to open a heavy program my screen went black with horizontal stripes and the system crashed. I rebooted and the system crashed in the initial blue screen. When restarting the 3rd time it worked, but it took not get the whole screen defaced with blue stripes and distorted picture. I took the service and they found that upgrading the system would solve the problem, but not solved. Then they told me it was the logic board problem (video card) and the budget is approximately $ 913 (I live in Brazil). I found absurd and decided to research about. Glad I'm not alone with this problem.

I really hope that Apple do something because I've read the history of people who have changed the logic board three times and the problem was not solved ...

Same issue as everybody else here.

Bought my late-2011 MacBook Pro in Feb 2012 (15", 2.2 GHz i7 with AMD Radeon HD 6750m 512 MB)

Yesterday, I started getting the grey screen when booting. Trying to boot to the recovery disk (and even the internet recovery disk) gave me the blue screen.

After a couple of hours of research, I find out that it was probably the GPU.

I ran these commands (in the Single user Mode - Command+S when you start the Mac) to deactivate the GPU (by removing its drivers) and then was able to boot.

    /sbin/fsck -fy /

    /sbin/mount -uw /

    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions

    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions

    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .

    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .

    touch /System/Library/Extensions

    exit

    (see article http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/120507/boot-hangs-on-grey-screen-even-w hen-booting-from-usb-drive-with-fresh-os-x-inst)

At least now I can use my Mac, but the graphics are very slow (obviously). This fix also prevent me from going into Sleep mode... (hopefully I will find a solution for that).

Anyway, I went to the Apple Store today. They confirmed that it is probably the Graphic card, and to fix this, I need to change the logic board for a nice 600 $ (Canadian dollars).

Now what... if I change the logic board, will I still have the same issue in 16-24 months and have to change that logic board again?

Why should we pay for something that looks like a design/chip issue?

Please share your experiences here... and hope for a replacement program for this...

Model: Macbook Pro Early 2011 15"

    Serial Number:C02F88YXDF8V

Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6490M

    Country: Australia

Details: I'm suffereing the same problem as described by previous posters.

Everytime I launch iPhoto, Photobooth, Photoshop or connect an external display the screen goes black and machine is unresponsive.

I have to reset the PRAM and SMC to get it to boot, but the problem persists.

This issue has cost me time and money and is completely unacceptable from a company that boasts about commitment to quality products the we pay premium prices for.

The problem has been documented here for over a year now - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?start=0&tstart=0

    Apple please respond!!!

Maybe overheating is related to bad thermal paste on the video board. Here is a video on how to replace it.

To change video logic board it cost to me 650 + labor + tax, so add this amount to 2800 and.... i made for myself decision: never ever to buy so expensive devices and in special apple. It's not worth at all. Due simple mathematic: buy a computer for 1200-1500 use 3 years chuck in the bin an after buy another one new. Thats it guys!!!

When will Apple wake up to the fact that they are losing log-time customers over this?

    Macbook Pro

    AMD GD 6770M

    8 Gv Memory

    Bootcamp installed

    Intel i7-2760

I had the same problems as everyone else. Motherboard replaced under Apple care. Died again within 2 weeks.

I am so fed up with Apple oignoring this problem, if apple don't start a replacement action I am prepared to return my MBP under warranty until the cost of replacing the motherboard is higher than what I paid for it and am willing to warn everyone on my local apple facebook page about this.

If they want us to go public about this and let them lose customers so be it.

I have been a happy customers with many other apple products, but it is really time Apple did something about this - enough excuses.

    Alan

    Just joining the thread...

Have the same: MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011 with discrete graphics card AMD Radeon HD 6750M

working temporarily using integrated card only (forced by gfxCardStatus).

Did anyone heard about self replacement of that card??

Would love to switch to some nVidia ones...
