Q: MBA 13 Mid 2013 crash Black screen

Has anyone else encountered an issue where they are using their Mid-2013 MacBook Air (13in) on battery when the machine suddenly goes to sleep or appears to, but it has actually crashed. The screen is dark, keyboard and trackpad are not responsive and the keyboard backlight is on. You have to force it off to restart by pressing and holding the power button? It is completely random, not a kernel panic, and nothing I can see in any logs. After the recent firmware update the symptoms changed such that the display is still active since the Apple logo is lighted. I've never had it happen when I'm on a/c power. Unfortunately its random and infrequent too. The recent firmware indicated it helped with battery issues, etc. didn't fix mine apparently.

That sounds like it may not be the exact same issue (possibly a different root cause with the same result). I've *never* seen that problem on my MBA, and I routinely [everyday] have the machine in sleep mode for very long periods of time. The only BSOD I was ever able to reproduce ones were the ones where you quickly try to wake the machine immediately after it sleeps, and that specific issue at least seems to be fixed (I can't reproduce it since the 10.9.2 update).

Trust me, it's the exact same problem, just not triggered on command.  I've seen many videos of folks triggering the problem and it is the exact same black screen that I get and you have to restart the computer.  Also, I wasn't saying that it going to sleep during a movie/itunes, I said that the display goes to sleep.  The music and movie keep playing, but normal settings will cause your display to dim in situations like that.  Like I said, I was using a mirrored display (TV).

I misunderstood that the display was going black when mirroring yet you continue to get audio. That is a totally separate issue than the black screen not responding to wake up hence the forced reboot. The new Airs should not dim when mirroring with clam closed.  On my old mac book it would dim on mirroriing unless I dimmed the srceen completelely. If I blackened the screen for a movie it did not dim when mirrored. Installing Caffeine eliminated dimming when using the computer screen for movies. But I assume you are talking about a newer Mac Air that can mirror with the clam shut? If you are dimming in that mode I gotta think that is a command problem that can be reset.???

Hmm… maybe the problem when you quickly tries to wake the computer after putting it to sleep has been fixed, but not entirely when it goes to sleep by itself.

The question is: do you get any ”Sleep Wake failure” logs under ”System Diagnostic Reports” if you open up Console.app (can be found in /Applications/Utilities)?

This seems to be the case for my machine (Mid 2013 MBA i7).  I can no longer cause the problem by hitting a key immediately after sleep, but I am still getting occasional sleep-wake failures if the machine goes to sleep by itself and I wake it sometime later.

    Hi john-de

This is excellent information and you are not alone.

The fix to fail ratio on the Fac ebook group is 23 resolved vs. 3 continue to fail at random. Please add your voice to a public forum that Apple cannot hide from.

Please search for "MacBook Air screen goes black" and help make others aware of this issue and the partially effective mask that Apple have thrown out without admitting it addresses this issue as it's such a fundamental flaw they don't dare mention it in public but we will.

I might add there is another fourm with Wifi in Mavs suddendly dropping and or not reconnecting after sleep. It seems this problem has had a few fixs but it is still a significant problem for many people.

    I see.

When you firce restart your computer and get back into the desktop, does it say anything about "your computer was restarted because of a problem"? And are you asked to send a report to Apple? Do you have any logs called "Sleep wake failure" if you open Console.app and look at the left side under "System Diagnostics".?

If it restarts itself and I don't force it, yes. All of that.

When I force quitted my Air I got a screen  on the reboot that said "your computer was restarted becaseue of a problem". It never asked me to send a report to Apple. 10.9.2 has now fixed the problem.

Okay, because I think it would be good to send those logs to Apple. You can report a bug and attach the logs here: http://bugreport.apple.com

Or if you want I can do it if you hand me the log. It's possible to make a copy of it when holding down the option/alt key and draging the log in the left side of Console.app out on to the desktop.

I know it takes a bit of an effort, but I think it might help to get the issue fixed.

Okay, I think by default asks if you want to send it to Apple. But perhaps I'm mistaken.

I've finally decided to add my voice to this whole fiasco. Primarily, because I want to see what success anyone has had with the safe-boot mode? To me, this proves beyond question it's a software issue...I cannot reproduce any of these issues in safe mode. In fact, I often run in safe mode while working just to avoid this. There are all kinds of little nuances you have to remain concious of, but it's better than having my **** $1300 computer freeze every single time it sleeps.

My problem only happens when my 13" MBA's screen dims/goes to sleep. It doesn't matter if I leave it alone, open/shut the lid, power cord or battery, wake after 5 hours or 30 seconds or 5 seconds with a keystroke, power button, trackpad gesture, click, etc...It simply will not fully wake if it goes to sleep.

I say "fully" wake because it's a toss-up whether it's at a gray/black screen, or the last screen I was working in with no functionality. Hard to say why that's the case and honestly, I don't care...it's frozen and requires a hard reset every single time. Incredibly annoying and the fact that this has been an issue at least since Mavericks was released is ridiculous beyond reason. I've literally tried everything mentioned in about 7 different threads on here. Have spent around $150 on various software that others have claimed worked for them...nothing.

Well, as I noted above the black screen when pressing a key right after sleep is fixed on my machine.  I now get very frequent sleep/wake crashes, way more than before the update.
