Q: Time machine problem

I backed up my Mac book pro hard drive two weeks ago using time machine. I did a second back up today, and now there is more data on the back up drive on the Macbook pro hard drive. What am I missing? Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    1. I had read Pondini in the past that does not refer to Mavericks.

    2. When TM (time machine) preferences were opened in Mavericks the original (initial) back up appeared to have been excluded, from the current back up.

    3. Since the last (initial) back up, about 10Gb of new pictures (data) was added to the drive. There has been a change in system files, per the security issue fix issued by Apple in the last ten days or so. That is all the change that has taken place on my Hard drive, as compared to the intial back up. Aditional back up should have been an incremental 10 Gb or so drive space not 180 Gb that was added in the process to the back up drive (Intial back up was around 260 Gb). Thanks. I still am at a loss to understand why a total of 170 Gb was added to the back up drive (instead of theoritical only 10 Gb). Thanks.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

Thanks for your clear instructions, one of the few that I have found. Here is a log that may give you the information required; from what I can tell, the scan back up was started at 1-20-16 and ended at 3-34-11. I am giving extra entries past the back up termination point so that you are able to see what was done past 3-34-11. I was unable to verify that data actually exists on the back up drive; everything was performed as the sytems admin. log in. Thanks again.

The last backup operation copied about 87 GB. That includes files that had changed since the last backup, as well as new files. If you feel that's too much, see below.

Virtualization software such as VMware, Parallels, or VirtualBox creates a large virtual-disk container that is constantly changing, so it has to be backed up every time Time Machine runs. That will quickly fill up any backup destination.

You should exclude the virtual-disk file(s) from your Time Machine backups. To do that, click the Options button in the  Time Machine preference pane. You may also be able to do it in the virtualization app's settings. Back up the files on the virtual disk from within the guest system, using a native backup application.

A compromise solution is to create a "snapshot" of the virtual machine in the virtualization software (not a Time Machine snapshot.) That will give you a single large file that never changes and only has to be backed up once. All the subsequent changes will be stored in a new file that's initially much smaller, but will grow over time. You should still exclude that file from TM backup. If you ever need to restore the VM from Time Machine, you'll have a working setup, which will make it easy for you to restore the rest of the data from within the guest system.

Another common cause of large TM snapshots is native OS X disk images. If you store a lot of data on one or more writable disk images, they should be in "sparsebundle" format, which will be backed up much more efficiently than any other format. A sparsebundle might be copied in an inconsistent state if it's backed up while the image is mounted and in the process of being written to. Make sure you unmount the image often so it can be backed up safely. Consider eliminating large read/write disk images from your workflow, if possible.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    tmutil compare | open -ef

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

The command may take several minutes to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.

Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.

Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.

Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.

At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:

    -------------------------------------

    Added:

    Removed:

    Changed:

These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

Caution: Under some conditions, tmutil may falsely flag files as not having been backed up when in fact they have been. It can be confused by multi-linked files, or by files with a modification date earlier than the one in the snapshot. This will not be an issue for most users. If the results of the above procedure surprise you, inspect your snapshots directly.

    Linc Davis

Thanks for your comprehensive reply (a little difficult for me to follow, but I am trying).

Here is the output after running the tmutil command.

    Added:         452.8K

    Removed:       12.2K

    Changed:       195.1M

    I have checked what had changed (! files); many of these are calender files that look like this;

    Library/Calendars/EE72F4CF-64CA-48F4-B023-08D9913FAD28.caldav/547AE471-5460-45F4 -BA2C-EEB1F020BA41.calendar/Info.plist

    1. I suppose I can exclude these from the "Options" in TM back up, right? Backing up calender events is of no use to me.

Same for: Library/Safari/LocalStorage/http_www.apogeephoto.com_0.localstorage. This appears to be perhaps a cookie in Safari from apogeephoto, right? Would not backing up safari, stop bookmarks and reading lists stop from being backed up?

    2. Many others that were changed (exclamation mark) look like this: Pictures/iPhoto Library/Thumbnails/2011/10/24/20111024-115658

These look like to they refer to pictures added to iphoto library, that I do need a back up.

    3. From what I am reading from what you have written, TM creates an actual disk image?

    4. Once the initial back up has been performed, how can one create incremental back up of the data itself? I suppose I need to ensure that the Applications folder is backed up, right?

    5. How does one ensure that the file format that is being used is of sparsebundle format?

    6. Is there a way to "see" what data was saved on the back up drive?

    7. I am using the Macbook pro as my primary computer, hence the back up drive is not hooked up to the laptop all the time for incremental back ups. It appears that TM does an hourly snap shot on the laptop itself; should one ideally back up the drive on a daily back up, to reduce large data back ups at once? I am learning about this whole thing, so I very much appreciate your patience. Thanks kindly.

I wouldn't bother excluding anything because of those results. The real question is whether your snapshots continue to be unusually large. You should be backing up much more often than once every two weeks. With a portable computer, the gaps should be filled in with network backups to a Time Capsule, a (new) AirPort base station with a USB hard drive connected, or another Mac.

Yes, around 87 Gb of data did change since the last back up, from what I can tell.

Thanks again. I shall back up in about a day and see what happens. So, the incremental back ups are just that?

My Time machine backups have become much smaller since the last posts. I have backed it up twice in the past 9 days, latest, today's back up took 8 minutes and shows:

    Added:         0B

    Removed:       0B

    Changed:       0B

Question: If I were to remove a pictures folder from the Mac-pro drive (has around 160G) data, will that folder be deletd from the Time machine back up next time I update my Macbook pro? Thanks. The initial backup (=original back up=first back up), did include the pictures folder. Thanks.

Not right away, but eventually, yes.

Hmmmmmm (a big hmmmmm). I was afraid of this answer, but true to the idea of a real archive, this is technically what one would expect to happen. Thanks for answering and confirming my suspicion. Are you an expert on Aperture back ups also?
