Q: Disconnect laptop from display - windows in OS are huge

When i disconnect my 13in RD Macbook Pro from the 27" thunderbolt display, the windows that were open become huge and sometimes am not able to even resize them because they are off the screen.  I understand that going from a TB display res to a 13" display is the reason, but is there any way or anything that can be done so that when I disconnect, all the windows will shrink in size so that they are at the same proportion they were on the TB display?
