Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

Can we have Cmd-N makes new folder instead of new Finder Window? I know that was lost eons ago, but I still remember OS 9.

    Thanks

Thank you so much for the Plugin - I can finally relax again and get on with my work without the constant window irritation!

Very good work Helgason and a very useful plugin for many. Hopefully no conflicts will arise. I must however agree with andyBall that it would be far better to give a brief description and link to the page

    http://siggi.hk/index.php?action=TheLostFinderNewWindow

than link directly to the download. That is how people (such as etrasof)t link their software. It is much safer and I would think much more accepted by the moderators on this forum.

As I said, good work and a lot of users will be very happy to have these functions back. I have installed it and so far no issues.

    Thanks

    Pete

It's marvellous, this plugin saves "classic" archive accessability. Now that the UI on the operating system side can be modified in this way with this plugin, what is the limit? There seems to be quite a few other things possible.

And one little question perhaps also: is there any security aspect to this plugin (and such modifications)? I am not skilled that I can read, let alone evaluate the code. It just works.

    Hey!

Thanx for the awesome effort!  But I can't seem to get it to work.

Right now in Mavericks, I can open a New Window by Control>Click>Pulldown "Open in New Window" ... or I can Command>Double Click...  I thought this SIMBL would change it so you just Double-Clicked (No Command or Control) so it was like the old Preference in Snow Leopard(?)  Am I doing something wrong?

    Thanx!!!

    Have you rebooted your Mac?

    Hey Peter:

I rebooted a few times already.

Maybe I'm getting this wrong - Is this little SIMBL supposed to change the OS X 9 Default so someone can "Open (ALL) Folders In New Windows" by just double-Clicking on them?  (Rather than Control>Click>Pulldown "Open in New Window" ... or Command>Double Click?)

My SIMBL seems ok.  I'm using ColorfulSidebar1.1.2 and it works great!  I'm likely doing something wrong.  I can be pretty dense sometimes.

If I can get this to work, I'll be a seriously somewhat happy camper.  Mavericks is really slowing me down so far, and this would really help out.  Of course, I'm still annoyed that Apple got rid of WindowShade... sigh.

Wow!!!  There are some really GREAT suggestions in this Thread!!!

Just a few from the last couple of pages:

“Command-Shift-A and Command-Shift-H for the Applications and Home folders respectively still open in the same folder…"

    That would be great!!!

…and “double-clicking while holding option key opens the folder in a new window and closes the one before at the same time.”

If I can get this TheLostFinderNewWindowSIMBL to work, I'm 1/3 of the way there!!!

    Thanx guys!!!

And CMD N for new folder.

Also install instructions is missing the step to enable SIMBL (checkbox).

I agree with those who like to use the OPTION key to open the folder in a new window and close the one before at the same time - that would make it all just perfect!

Helpfull for Apple newcomers but a serious speed navigation nightmare for me.

I just got rid of the whole extra window mess.

by clicking "alt cmd T" on EVERY window i encounter.

I know my way around so the whole thing is superfluous if it will not work as before.

Then its back to the good old...

Cmd up/down keys (moves up or down hierarchy)

Alt Cmd up/down keys (moves up or down hierarchy BUT closed window behind)

If this behavior vanishes then im buying a PC

I have had enough of this Apple thoughtlesness.

Soon they will perhaps take away the marking of a folder we have come out from.

Making the mac like that OS with the silly little dog with the wagging tail.

Who knows. They might be planning a little woofah as we speak.

And OS7? Omg. Thats even worse but another story.

    Music vids in landscape? Nope.

Custom labels in alphabetical order? Nope.

    Names on my movies? Nope.

What the - - - - is going on at Apple?
