Q: How do I stop downloading the voice in Dictation and Speech?

Someone was playing with my 'Dictation and Speech' voices, and accidentally started downloading a voice. It's been hogging a lot of my Internet, so how do I stop it? Am using Mavericks 10.9.2 on Mac Mini Late 2012.

First of all, that sounds like your computer is not secured from other users. Make sure to have the login page come up on startup and set a password for your computer to wake from sleep, etc.

In your Dictation & Speech panel, select the Text to Speech section and in the Voice drop-down, choose Customize...

In there find the voices that have been added to your listing and uncheck them. Hopefully, that will stop any further downloading.

The voice currently downloading is grayed out, meaning you can't stop it directly.

HOWEVER, if you find it in Activity Monitor you can. Open Activity Monitor and go to the Network tab.

Sort the activity by Received Bytes and your culprit should show at the top, with the name softwareupdates or something like that. Force quit that and you will get a notice that your voice download was interrupted. It will be unchecked in Dictation & Speech.

    Hope this helps.

thanks, the activity monitor option worked.

anyway, the reason why the someone (small kid) could access my computer was because i let him use it, and i must have left my system preferences on.

    thanks again.

Thanks so much for asking and answering this question. Seems like going to Activity Monitor is a good step for other situation similar to this one.

    Cheers,

Thank you so much, Timothy!!!  I didn't realize it would automatically start downloading when I checked  "enhanced dictation" and was trying to figure out how to stop the download while it was in process.  I guess this is the one time I am happy my internet connection is slow, so I had time to find the answer.  I so appreciate your answer!
