Q: Any way to open AppleWorks .cwk files?

I was going through some old files on a flash drive and I noticed there were a few old .cwk files.  Of course, there isn't AppleWorks anymore, instead there's iWork.  Unfortunately, I can't open these old files with iWork.  Is there still some hope for converting and opening .cwk files?  Any help is appreciated greatly.

Apple had decided it had reached the end of its useful like and that upgrading it was no longer worth their effort.

It would be nice to know why a perfectly fine program will not run anymore(Appleworks 6) now that we all have Mavericks.  What a bunch of BULL . . .

The trouble is that AppleWorks isn't 'perfectly fine' unfortunately - it's a PPC program and only ran in Snow Leopard because of Rosetta which enabled PPC programs to run on Intel. Rosetta has not been included in Lion and above - I believe there may be a contractual issue about that - and it's not practicable for Appleworks to be made to run in Intel: it would require a complete re-write from the ground up, and in any case the program was 'end of lifed' several years ago. iWork was positioned as a partial replacement.

I was in the process of converting my old .CWK document files to Pages w/ my last version of Pages. Then I recently upgraded to Mavericks, which apparently upgraded my Pages. Imagine my horror when I could no longer open .CWK files - I got the dreaded message "Pages cannot open files of this type." With my hair standing on end, I did a search and thankfully found this post. I tried the "Open With" option and it opened the VERY OLD cwk files just fine. Not sure if this will work for other types of CWK files, but this option works fine for document/word processing files, even old ones.

    Thanks. Appreciate this post.

That happened to me, in Snow Leopard, when I bought a brand new copy of iWork from eBay. I got that dreaded message.

That was Pages 4.0 - but when I upgraded to 4.0.4 via a free download from the Apple website, it opened AW files just fine.

    @B in CA,

Pages '09 is ble to open AppleWorks 6 word processing docs, Numbers '09 is able to open AW 6 spreadsheet docs, and Keynote '09 is able to open AW presentation documents. If you 'upgrading' to the new versions of these does NOT remove the '09 versions. You will find them in a folder named iWork '09, located in your Applications folder.

    Regards,

    Barry

This is a blatant advert and may be removed from the discussions. However, as it's free software, I am currently downloading it to see if the claims made for opening AppleWorks documents is true. I will report back.

It does open AW files and also older CW. It even can or will be able to in near future to open the PICT files which is otherwise possible to open.

Very mixed results with LibreOffice, opening AW documents.

    1. It opens WP documents in its Writer module fine, with the original fonts and formatting.

    2. It opens SS (spreadsheets) also in the Writer module, as a complete mess - unusable.

    3. It opens DR (drawings) also in the Writer module, but seems able to recognise individual vector and text frames, so they can be moved around (and re-sized?), so that's a definite plus.

I didn't try the database as I use FM Pro, nor did I try bitmapped PT documents - there are enough free or inexpensive graphics programs around so there's no need.

Yes, it is not perfect, but it seems to offer some hope for people with lots of old AW documents (as long as they aren't spreadsheets!)

I've just tried LibreOffice's Drawing module and it seems very capable - at least as good as the old AW Drawing module and probably better in many ways.

    Hello,

yes, actually, LibreOffice does not accept to recover any database, presentation and spreadsheet AppleWorks/ClarisWorks's files (and so it reverts to the basic filter with try to extract some characters).

    Notes:

    - I have added, in the third party filter used by LibreOffice, some code to try to recover the main content of database and spreadsheet files (as a spreadsheet file) ; ie. the floating value/formula/text which appear in the different cells ( but not the embedded graphic, textbox, filter, report ) ...

    - the paint graphic are now exported as a draw files (and will no longer appear with a ridiculous size), but the drawing files still remain exported as a text files,

    - I do not know when these changes will appear in LibreOffice (maybe in version 4.3 or latter)

    - if you want to test the actual version, you can download the AppleScript's mwawOSX (which calls the third library to do the conversion) in https://sourceforge.net/projects/libmwaw/files/ , but it is also far from perfect.
