The latest iOS update the original iPad can use is iOS 5.1.1. To get a later iOS version, you need a newer iPad.

You cannot update iOS on that iPad.

The original iPad can be updated as far as iOS 5.1.1 and that's it. All newer iPads can be updated to iOS 7.1.
