HT203604: Mac App Store: Cannot update App Store purchases or updates do not seem available

Learn about Mac App Store: Cannot update App Store purchases or updates do not seem available
george wayne

Q: Airmail e-mail client: I have been using App Store software update successfully until just recently now after getting an update message and after signing in to my account and initiating the download update it fails half way through the operation.

I have been using the e-mail client "Airmail" for some time as a purchase from the App Store and it is still working OK with V 1.3.1 but I recently received a message from software updates that a newer version is available and to download the update from the App Store.

The first attempt at the update download for version V1.3.2 stopped half way through the download with the red message text "download unsuccessful".

The on-screen instructions say to select the Purchases window in the App Store app and then try the update download again.

However the same thing happens - it fails part way through the download.

I have pefrformed many app update downloads in the past and have not experienced this problem before and could it be due to some glitch with the Airmail download?

Even trying to do a completely new download does not work.

Cheers,

Wayne

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Hi Linc,

I tried what you suggested several times with no luck.

Each time I used LaunchPad after "Clearing Display" as you suggested there was a lot of lines of entries but on finding any relating to the App Store and selecting them the command-C command did not work so I have taken a screenshot of the window to show the entries I selected.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Dear Linc,

Yes that resolved the problem but with some weird results.

1.) I could only log in to safe mode without holding down the shift key the second time during log in as my PW is all lower case and holding down the shift key rendered my PW upper case. Anyway I was able to log in successfully.

2.) On using the App Store app there may be a conflict somewhere as each time I logged in with my Apple ID and tried to download the Airmail update I kept getting a message that "updates are available for another account.." whereas I don't have another account. I was thus unable to download the update in "safe mode".

3.) However on re-booting and going back to my normal OS and trying the App Store Airmail update download all worked OK and the problem was resolved. Thanks

4.) however now in the normal OS I have a major issue with Safari - it crashes on booting and each time the Reporting window appears and I click report or OK it reboots and repeatedly crashes. Even attempting a Force Quit resulted in Safari rebooting and could not be quit. I had to turn off the Mac's power and restart to get any control. But Safari still behaves the same way although I can now force quit it, but it won't run. So perhaps I had better uninstall it and download and install a new version.

    View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any.

    Step 2

In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

    Hello again Linc,

Thanks for your assistance with this frustrating matter.

I am finding that the command-C is still not working in my Console but I am getting around it by using the menu and task bar commands.

Unfortunately each time I try to attach the Crash report and Diagnostics report I get a message from this Apple Support Communities site that the file content is not allowed.

Am I not obtaining the right report formats from Console?

That's because of a bug in the forum software. Please post the output on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I am having trouble using Pastebin.

Using the Chrome browser on my Mac I created a Pastebin account and on logging in I couldn't find an uploader to load the Safari Crash report and if I dragged the report into the new paste box then there was no means of getting a link.

Also after obtaining a Pastebin Google Chrome Extension it also suffered similar problems.

Have I missed something in the way I should be using it?

You don't need an account or a Chrome extension. Just paste into the New Paste text field on the linked page and click Submit.

    Have done and the path is;

    /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari

    - sorry about the size but that is just one report item from Console's list of crash reports.

I guess I haven't made this clear. The idea is to post the Console output on Pastebin, creating a new page on that site. Then post a link to that page here.

Ok and now an update for you before posting the Console output on Pastebin.

Since commencing our discussion about Safari problems I have now observed some other unusual behaviour with the Mountain Lion OS that is not consistant with the System Preferences settings.

On mentioning to an Apple Techo in my local Apple Store, he suggested using Recovery Disk Assistant to do a re-install of the OS over the top of the existing to fix up any various possibly corrupted Apps etc.

I have now done this and so far things look to be back to normal including Safari.

Anyway not all has been for nothing as I have learnt about Console and Pastebin from you, both of which I have not used before.

So thankyou for your help, it was very much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Wayne
