Q: Devices rapidly disconnect/reconnect - Macbook Air Mid 2013

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I have been unable to sync devices (specifically ipad mini and iphone 4s) to my MId 2013 Macbook Air. They wil rapidly connect and disconnect, and I'm unable to do anything with the device. This happens with both USB ports.  Any suggestions?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    Hello,

I also have this issue with my new (late 2013) iMac.

I have an iPad (1st gen, 30pin) and an iPhone 5 (Lightning connector). I regularly transfer photos & music between the two. Recently I have noticed that sometimes when connecting the two devices to a 0.5m USB2 extension lead both devices connect and reconnect like crazy.

I do not get the issue when plugging them directly into the iMac (via the original Apple cables). I have tried on multiple ports & extension cables, all the same. What I find weird is that it worked previously with it and now it will not. Also when plugging the extension lead into a USB hub (plugged into the same iMac) they charge fine.

    Any ideas?

I have same issue with my 15 rmbp (late 2013) and 32GB wifi iPad Air.

The weird thing is, for the same USB cable, it works fine for my iPhone 5. Furthermore, while I plug the same USB cable to the USB port on the right side of my rmbp, it also works.

The only case this is happening is that: I plug my iPad Air to the USB port on the lift side of my 15 rmbp with a specific lightening cable. Change cable/USB port/device will solve this issue.

Based on these results, I believe it is a software issue rather than hardware.

I have a 15 rmbp (late 2013) and 64GB 3G iPad and am having the same problem. I found that I was using an old cable so I swaped it and I managed to get it to connect sometimes. I was also plugging it in to the leftside USB port. Today after reading your post I plugged it in the right and it worked fine, connected and stayed connected. Just to test it was an issue with the left port I plugged it back to the left. Unfortunately, it also worked, therefore no idea what is causing it but is is a very annoying intermittent fault. But I have noticed that I get a better success rate when I have only one device connected, ie my iPhone is not plugged in at the same time.

I'm getting this problem with a brand new Macbook Pro with my iPad and cable that worked fine with another machine (also a macbook pro).

When I plug my ipad in I get the following notification in the console every time it connects and disconnects:

15/04/2014 4:00:43.637 pm usbmuxd[854]: _AMDeviceInsecureNotificationCallback (thread 0x100781000): Received insecure notification AMDNotificationFaceplant

Not completely sure that the two macbook pros are on the same release of Mavericks - will test tonight.

Looks like a software issue to me...

Any of you having this issue happen to have VMware Fusion on your system?  Mine has this issue only when running VMware Fusion. After shutting it down, the issue remains.  A reboot will resolve it, but once I start VMware Fusion again it starts disconnecting and reconnecting rapidly again.

I havw the issue and vmware fusion too but found no corelation between the two fact. It's seem to be for all other person an unofficila cable or an old cable that doesnt support the intensity of power provided by the mac.

Charge ur ipad to full battery 100% and connect it to your mac. It's just that ipad tend to disconnect from low power connection. This should solve the problem.

For what it's worth, I had a similar problem: iPhone appeared then vanished from iTunes, and lots of messages of the form:

    7/7/14 8:54:08.531 PM com.apple.usbmuxd[17]: MuxInterfacev2Receive expected sequence 184 got 29159 from 0x3-a7fd62f346f2ac36afbac14089b7ab7a1af92e42@0xfa140000

    ... on the console.

Changing USB cables fixed it (even though the offending USB cable was a shiny new Apple USB cable).

Please help me. I have the same issue. I will try different cable wish me luck, I have iPad 3 WiFi and Macbook Air 2013 11 inch. I love my iPad and don't want to upgrade because the Macbook alone was way over my budget but still I am looking for longevity in a laptop.

I had the same problem with a Macbook air bought in June 2014 and ipad air. Using another cable (came with a iphone 5C) fixed the problem. I'll ask for a cable replacement. Both, the original troublemaking cable, and the other one, were original cables. Software is up to date.

I reckon its because your laptop is not supplying enough power through the usb port. Usually when your laptop charge is low it tends to do that. Is there some way to force it to supply more power? somehow?

It's a brand new macbook air. Used another cable and worked. Let's blame to old cable, the one that came with the ipad air.
