Q: MBP Retina bad display on external Dell display

My MBPr LCD display is great: crisp and clear.

However, when I connect my desktop Dell display, the result is washed out and difficult to read fonts.

I've tried with both mini-DVI and mini-VGA.   The mini-VGA is perhaps marginally better, but in both

cases is borderline unusable.

Any clues?

Thanks!

I had a very similar problem connecting my MBPr to a Dell U2410 monitor using an HDMI cable.  The image quality on the Dell looked terrible and grainy, kind of like a really bad jpg image.  I fixed the problem by changing the Sharpness setting in the monitor menu.  Sharpness was set to 50 and then once I set it to 0 it looked perfect (which is to say still not nearly as nice as the retina display!).

For a Dell U2410 and probably other Dells, the Sharpness setting was found in the menu under:

Menu -> Display Settings --> Sharpness

This bug is finally fixed by the OS X update 10.9.3 .

If there exist anyone setting the sharpness to 0, Please change it back to 50(middle)

I am still having this issue, my fonts look terrible on my external Dell U2414H, connected to MBP Retina late 2013 running latest version of Mavericks.

I'll include a couple of screenshots.

I've tried connecting HDMI to HDMI as well as Mini Display to HDMI. I am using the cables supplied with my Dell monitor. I've tried forcing my RGB settings with the Ruby script as well as adjusting my sharpness on the displays menu.

Would really appreciate some help if anyone knows how I might correct this.

    Thanks

My monitor is Dell U2311H and i met the same issue at the first time i connect it to my rMBP with a thunderbolt --> VGA

After googling a whole night but found no solution from the internet.

But eventually, i found the solution is super simple

    Solution

Go to your monitor menu by pressing real button on your monitor and find something like "Auto Adjust"

(In my case, it is "Menu" -> "Auto Adjust" -> "Press tick to adjust the screen automatically" )

Then, texts are back to solid and everything goes perfect now.

    Cheers

I was getting the same problem with my Dell U2711 into a Macbook air. I was running the macbook on battery with the lid up and text and icons were jagged, but images were fine. When I plugged in the power cable and then closed the lid of the macbook to go into clamshell mode, the display then adjusted and text and icons appeared correctly.

How did you managed to get the fonts as the 1st image?
    That's what Im looking for, a pixel-perfect super-crispy font.

There is a specific option on the terminal theme settings that toggles the anti-aliased (smooth) font.
