Q: Added ePub shows up in iBooks but can't sync to iPad

I added an ePub (Not an iTunes purchase) to the Mavericks iBooks app.  It shows up in the iBooks Library—and I can open and read it on the Mac— but when my iPad is connected, the ePub in question is not listed among those selectable for syncing to the device.  I see other epubs that I added to iBooks by the same means and they are in the list.  Very frustrating.  Appreciate any help.

Regards

I had the same issue. I wasn't able to sync newly purchased content to my iPad or iPhone. For some reason the iTunes library is still reading the iBooks library as if it is still part of it. To resolve this issue you have to reset the library in iTunes.

In order to reset the library you have to following these steps:

    1. Quit iTunes

    2. Go to the iTunes folder

    3. Delte teh following: "iTunes Music Library.xml", "iTunes Library.itl"

    4. Open iTunes

    5. Drag the ITunes folder onto iTunes and let it repopulate your songs and other content.

    6. You should now be able to sync your books.

I hope this helps you. It worked perfectly for me.

    Hello,

here was my solution (after countless other tricks which did nothing) to reset my iBooks app in OS X and get my purchases from the iTunes store in there.

    *** very simple walkthrough ***

1- delete all books from iBooks on OS X

2- delete all books from iBooks on iOS devices

3- sign out of iTunes for OS X

4- sign out of iBooks for OS X

5- sign out of iTunes on all iOS devices (from Settings/iTunes & App Store)

6- delete everything in /Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books on OS X

7- open Disk Utility on OS X and repairs all permissions

8- turn off/on all iOS devices, don't connect to iTunes yet

    9- reboot OS X computer

10- open iTunes on iOS, re-enable iTunes & App Store account (log back in)

11- verify that nothing is left in folder mentioned in step 6 above

12- open iTunes on OS X, do the same

13- opne iBooks on OS X, do the same

14- add some PDFs in iBooks on OS X

15- download some previous purchases from iBooks on OS X

16- sync OS X with iOS using iTunes

Voilà. Step 15 did not work for me until now. Everything appears to be under control now.

    Hope this works for y'all!

    Peace out,

    Dr S.

I found an easier way to do this. I put the ePub file in my Google drive. I also have the app on my iPad. It tells me it can't open in this app and offers other apps. I chose iBook and voila, it's in there!

Denisepiha - brilliantly simple. I did the same thing with DropBox. Thank you for the simple and elegant solution.

Thanks! It was always going to need a complete clean out, wouldn't have been able to do that by myself.

You can also try going to the iBooks app, then clicking File > Move Books From iTunes. This worked for me the one time I (luckily!) discovered. It should move all the iTunes books into iBooks, and meanwhile sync the iBooks book list with the list you can choose to sync from in iTunes for your device. hope this helps!

Thank you so much! This did the trick for me without having to wipe the whole library off. Great solution!

i had to add my answer because none of the above worked for me.  after I upgraded my ipad to the latest version i was no longer able to download epub files and view them on my ipad.  the reason is because of the DRM.  so i followed the steps here: http://lifehacker.com/5954466/how-do-i-get-rid-of-the-drm-on-my-ebooks-and-video which basically requires calibre and some plugins.  this article is 2 years old and it's unbelievable that there are no updates to it, but thankfully the method still works.  it takes a bit of work.  unfortunately, i wasn't able to get the calibre to work on my mac, so i had to use my pc to do it.  in particular, i wasn't able to navigate to the Preferences/Plugins/Load plugin from file menu in the mac version of calibre.  the pc version worked though.

A brilliantly simple solution, but does it work for PDF files you want to be able to use via iBooks on your iPad?
