Q: Importing footage stored within the library FCPX 10.1

Hello, I like to put additional footage, photos into an event folder and then import the bits I want into the event within FCP X but now it's in a library that location is blanked out, I can't get to it on the import page. Any work arounds, ideas?

Thanks

You can select Library while importing media, during import you can add to existing event or create a new event within the selected library.

Try selecting the library which contains the event to which you are adding footage.

Try it, open an event, go to import and then go to a library, oyui don't get the option to choose it.

Select the library and then use Cmd-I.

Sorry all, am I missing something here or just being a dork, cmd-I just takes you to the import page, I can see the libraries there in the file structure bit they're still blanked out so I can't choose them!

Perhaps I'm not understanding what you're trying to do.

If you select the library or event you want to import into and press Cmd-I you can import your folders into a keyword collection.

Folders in events are to organize collections and not to hold clips.

Ok i was under the impression that libraries were a plac ewhere you can store everything, I had a load of photos for a timelapse that I stored in the event folder in a library, I then (using open p;ackage contents) got to that event folder and made the photos into a timelapse mov. When I went to import that mov into my event the location it is stored in (event folder in a library) is inaccessable, the library package is blanked out. Thanks for your time.

You can't do that. The library bundle is not intended to be accessed by the user but by the application. Perhaps you need to be working with external media. Or you can copy the stills out if the bundle and make the time lapse externally using Compressor or Streamclip. Or you can make the time lapse internally in a compound clip.

Mmmm seems a bit daft that the library can't be accessed by the user when it's meant to store everything. Maybe something to consider changing? Thanks for your help.

You can access the content. You can't import from the library. Everything you import is supposed to be linked through the library. You are not supposed to be creating content inside the bundle. The application cannot keep track in the database what you do inside the bundle. There is zero chance this will change. If you need to with with your media externally it might be better not to use managed media.

I think the best option would be to create a timelapse some where external to the library and import it as required.
