Q: 2009 Mac Pro will not boot with the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display

My 2009 Mac Pro (4,1) will not boot with the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display attached to the display port. I boots normally with my 30" Apple Cinema Display attached to the DVI.

I assume the 10.9.2 update broke the native drivers for the 7950 GPU and also assume Apple will need to make the correction ina future OS update. However, if others with this GPU are having no problems with 10.9.2, then I can look elsewhere for possible solutions.

Please let me know if you are having no problems!

Thanks,

Dave

What switch are you guys talking about? I'm having the same issue although mine is with a Radeon 7970, it was working great till 10.9.2 but now it won't boot up unless I put in my old 6870

We are talking about a switch on the official Mac Edition 7950.  It was a physical switch on the card that controlled if you booted the card using UEFI or EFI.

As there is no "Mac Edition" 7970 you won't see the switch on your card, your card was designed for PC's with UEFI.

Ok thanks, is there anything I can do since I'm not using the Mac edition of the card or do I just need to wait for an update?

Did you try changing the switch on the GPU? I assume you have the Mac Edition?

yeah, it should work okay.  I have an "official" sapphiretech 7950 card -the one with the switch-, used it in a 2008 and it ran fine, but a bit slower.  Monitor used was a 20" Apple Cinema Display, then a 24" samsung LED monitor. Both were fine. If you go to display settings, hold down the option key and click on "scaled" you'll get more display options, supposedly.  Worked okay with Mavericks (10.9.x). Now on 10.10.3 and there's a little lag and a few bugs videowise, notthing seriious, but just enough to make you say" Hmmm...what's up with that> and is there a fix coming?"

I am having the same issues of my Mac Pro(Mid 2010, 10.10.3, Radeon/Sapphire HD 7950 Mac) not booting my monitors using display ports. The Mac Pro will boot a monitor using DVI. The switch is in the Mac position. Any thoughts?

    sgt. glenn,

Did you ever solve this?  I have the same Mac Pro, 10.10.5, same card - works fine with DVI, but I'm thinking of buying a new Dell 31.5" 4K monitor (my trusty old 30" Apple Cinema HD Display is starting to have problems with the side bezel switches, causing it to turn off and on a lot before it reaches a stable temperature) and I'm afraid that I'll run into the same problem trying to drive a 4K monitor using the 2 mini DisplayPort ports.

I am having the same issue with my Early 2009 Mac Pro (4,1) running on El Capitan 10.11.6.  My Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition boots to a black screen with Displayport, but works fine connected with DVI.  I am using a Dell U3014 30" monitor (2 of them, actually).  My Radeon's switch is set to the right (Mac) position, also labeled "2" as shown on the green circuit board of the card.  The "About this Mac" window shows "AMD Radeon HD 7950 3072 MB" next to the Graphics label.

Clarification: My Mac DOES actually boot when connected with Displayport, but I get a black screen.  Switching to DVI after my Mac has booted reveals the fact that it is sitting waiting for me on the login screen.

Furthermore, connecting BOTH the Displayport and DVI to the SAME single monitor (and selecting DVI as the input source so that I can see my Mac's desktop), the OS thinks that there are 2 monitors connected!  This is evident when I look at System Preferences->Displays.  It shows me the Arrangement tab and the monitor identifier number (1 or 2) in brackets in the window's title.  The desktop that is actually displayed (1 or 2) depends on whether I have the Displayport cable connected to the 1st or 2nd port on the back of the graphics card.

Anyway, what this boils down to is that I can't get any picture through Displayport.  I can confirm that the cables work as I've used them on other Macs.

    What could be the problem?

not 100% sure on this one, AarbronBeast.  On some models of the card the position of the switch might be reversed

(the manual could be wrong on this one) so instead of being on 2, it should be on 1, maybe the switch is a little funny...

apart from zapping the pram and resetting the PMU, maybe upgrade to El Capitan. Your video card is in slot 1, the 16x one, correct? I have a Dell monitor,. it's a U 2713 HM, and I used to have a few problems with my Dell monitor, yeah, it would work, but...  what helped out was getting a tweaked  EDID for the Dell monitor on the Mac. Dell, of course, doesn't officially support its' monitors being used on a mac, but as both you, I and others know, they do work...so....

anyways, here's the link to the EDID override, hope it works out for you OK

    Thanks for the reply, Johnb-one.

I've tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, to no avail.  I am already running the latest version of El Capitan.  And that script (as dodgy as it is) is for a different Dell monitor and doesn't work on El Capitan anyway.  And, yup, my card is indeed in the PCI 16 slot.

The other switch position on my card (position 1) results in the "About This Mac" window to show my graphics card as "Radeon 7xxx", which indicates that it isn't set to use the Mac bios.

Still no luck here.  My card vendor opened up an RMA to test this issue in their lab.  I will post their results here.  Maybe I just have a bum card and it needs to be exchanged..

    Anyone have any other ideas?
