Q: Ricoh Aficio SP c830dn and Windows Print Server

This may be the wrong place to post this, but I can't seem to find a more appropriate place.

I have a Ricoh Aficio SP c830dn printer that I need to print to our Windows 2008 Server R2 print server. When sending prints to the printer they hang in the print queue on the Mac with the status "Printing - Copying print data".

The Windows server is configured with LPR services enabled.

Printer is added on the Mac using LPD.

Same configuration we use on several dozen successfully printing HP printers.

The behavior is consistant across Apple hardware.

The behavior is consistant across various Mac OS X versions 10.7.x and 10.8.x.

I can print directly to the printer without issue usng IP printing.

I can print to the Windows print server with the generic postscript driver no problem.

I can print to the Windows print server from Window 7 without issue.

The problem definitely seems to be between Mac OS X using the Ricoh driver and Windows print server.

If I leave the job in the print queue long enough (20-30 minutes) the job will evenutually complete.

I've tried vaious versions of the Windows drivers on the print server to see if they have any impact, and they all produce the same result.

I contacted Ricoh and they said they don't support using their printers through a Windows print server on Mac OS X. They did offer to sell me an annual network service contract to help figure out why it doesn't work, but would not gaurentee that they would solve the issue.

If anyone can provide some asisstance in configuring this correctly your assistance would be appreciated.

If anyone wants to spread the word that Ricoh is not an Apple friendly company and should be avoided... that would also be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Karl

    Karl,

I have been struggling with this issue all day and I am so glad I found your post! (Here and on the MS site.) A Ricoh MP C3003 was just installed here and I am having literally the same exact issues and did the same troubleshooting you did. After you modified the PPDs, is that setup still working for you? I have already reached out to our print vendors to see if they have a Ricoh contact to help with this, or any other insight. I really appreciate you posting all of these details here.

    Kristine,

The modifications I made to the PPD are still working fine. It does cause some confusion for people who aren't good at following directions. We're working on an installer package to make it easier for folks. I'm glad I was able to help. Still kind of sad that manufactures aren't responding to this issue. The same problem exists for our Xerox Phaser, but the request for printer status times out a little faster and can be canceled so I haven't taken the time to see how their PPD can be modified.

Thanks for this thread, we just got some brand new Ricoh SP 831DN printers, and were fighting with this. Modified the PPD, and voila! prints fast! And sadly, as mentioned, Ricoh was no help with this. We have also been having this issue with Xerox Phaser 6600 printers, maybe this will work there too.

For people who find this thread in the future, this is still a problem. I experienced it with a 2008r2 print server and OS 10.10.4. The Ricoh copier models that had the problem for me are c4503, 3554, 5054, and 8100s. However after making the PPD modifications as suggested earlier everything appears to work correctly.
