I haven't had this problem for months now after following this suggestion (see above):

"From the Apple menu bar, select "Mail" then "Preferences"

    Select "Accounts"

You should see each of your email accounts that you use Mail for listed individually and will need to take the remaining steps for each one listed.

Select your email account in the left window, and notice the last item on the screen in the right window is the TLS Certificate

Click on the selector next to "TLS Certificate:"

Choose the "com.apple.idms.appleid.prd.xxxx" listing instead of "None"

    Quit Mail"

For me, changing the TLS certificate is a temporary fix. The problem returned in less than a week.

And have you confirmed that your Apple account(s), have the correct MAIN account email, ##@me.com or ##@mac.com or ##@icloud.com.

I have two systems running Mavericks.  One is my MacPro which I did a clean install and upgrade to Mavericks then migrated user data from Time Machine backup.  Mail App has worked flawlessly on this system.

My second system was a 2012 15 MBP with Retina on which I followed the same proceedure I outlined above.  Mail fails to quit, sync properly and is generally flakey all around.

In December 2013 I replaced this MBP with a new late 2013 15 MBP with Retina.  This system came with Mavericks factory install.  I used the data migration assistant and restored from Time Machine backup and the problem persists.

I have since tried all of the suggestions in this thread..   some work once then mail returns to its bad behavior.  I have also deleted all mail accounts, .pref files and such and set them back up from scratch, restoring all data from the mail servers.  STILL mail refuses to quit or sync properly.....

My account types (configured exactly the same on both working install of Mavericks and the problem child)

    1) iCloud  (legacy .Mac account)

    2) Hosted Exchange from Rackspace

    3) Hosted Excange from Inbox Solutions

I've disconnected all Apple email (which I rarely use) and iCloud accounts, and it made no difference.

Just adding a me-too. Mail sometimes won't get mail and won't close (unless of course I force close). It also sometimes shows a bunch of exclamation points next to each account--answer to this one is to restart system. Time for a fix already for this vital function!

I'm going to throw in an update. I've been experiencing this problem since at least Lion and originally posted to this thread long ago. I've tried all the solutions here, and nothing really works. The bug always returns to rear its ugly head. Crazy.

    I think it's a Mail-Calendar problem.  I just reported this as a bug to Apple and--if I'm right--hope that they'll have a solution soon.

The problem for me was that it was just an intermittant issue:  sometimes I could quit and other times Mail would hang.  I discovered it only happened when I used the "automatic event creator" in Mail.  This apparently opens Calendar in the background, but doesn't show that it's open in the Dock.  Calendar also--at least on my Mac--doesn't fully shut down when you're done creating the event.

I noticed this when force quitting Mail for the umpteenth time; I saw that Calendar was also active in the "force quit" list even though I hadn't opened it and it didn't show that it was active in the Dock.  I force quit Calendar and Mail quit normally.

For now, I just make certain that Calendar is quit before I attempt to quit Mail.

My mail and calendar will not open after installing the 2014-002 update as well.

Having same issue on Mac Air - running Mavericks OS X 10.9.4.  Come on Apple, get a fix on this.  Has anyone figured out how to fix this besides using 'Force Quit'?

I only have the problem on rare occasions.  I find it only occurs if I try to quit Mail immediately after sending a message.  If I wait a few moments -- no problem.

Well I have a BRAND NEW iMac with Mavericks installed...indeed, I was unable to 'log on' anywhere, set up an iCloud account, etc initially as I was awaiting Fibre Optic to be installed into my new home. So, without an internet connection, one of the first quirks I noticed was the Mail app not quitting unless I forced it to do so. The above TLS solution unfortunately is rendered impotent as the 'TLS Certificate' and subsequent listings 'com.apple.....etc' is not visible with or without an email account (I have since set up iCloud but Mail would not quit even before that). This is the first time I have had this problem with Mail after many years of use on other Mac OSs. An immediate solution from Apple would be appreciated - new users should not have to rectify a problem which is evidently borne with Mavericks!
