Q: mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Ok so Wifi is really starting to annoy now....

I have a 2013 Mac Air (about 1 month old). I upgraded to mavericks and now EVERYTIME the machine goes to sleep, i close the lid, whatever the wifi connection is shut down and on logging in again, the wifi doesn't connect. I have to manually turn off wifi and then turn on again before selecting my network (and usually needs 2 attempts).

This is unacceptable.

Does anybody else suffer from this issue? any ideas on how to fix it (other than reverting back to MLion - if that's even possible)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Kind Regards

I can report that, so far, the fix I posted here a month ago that solve it for a new MacBookPro with Mavericks, seems to have solved the problem on the new iMac.

That fix is, go to Energy Saver control panel and uncheck "Wake for network access".

Kindly try it and let us know if it works for you.  If enough people find this works, we'll let Apple know via the Developer's Bug Report.

I have a rMBP 13" 2013 Late model. Unchecking this feature did not work for me. Only shutting off BT works for me, which is just a temporary fix since now i cant use BT

Unfortunately, I too have to report that this (unchecking "Wake for network access") does not fix my problem.

    Back to the ping workaround.

Probably I've found the reason of this annoying problem and I've found a solution too (at least it worked for me).

Thanks to many people of this thread that found that the wifi problem is connected to the bluetooth activation. They gave me the right idea that I followed to find the solution.

The problem is due to the "Order of services" in the Networking Preferences (sorry for my translation but my OS is in italian so I'm guessing how the option menu could be in english). If the DUN Bluetooth or PAN Bluetooth service is BEFORE the Wi-Fi service, after waking up your Mac, your Wi-Fi will reconnect very very slowly or will never reconnect automatically at all.

But if you change the order of your Networking Services and you put the Wi-Fi at the first place, your Wi-Fi will reconnect almost immediately (it worked for me!).

To change the Networking Service Order go to Preferences --> Network, press the Gear Wheel in the lower left of the window, choose the "Set Service Order..." option. A new window will appear with different kind of connections.

Drag your Wi-Fi connection to the top. Press OK, and then Apply.

Restart your Mac and verify by yourself if the Wi-Fi problem has been solved.

I've tired this several times, no luck. The only thing that is getting me by is completely shutting off the BT

I have been told that the problems in WIFI connection could be that my new machine has a more up to date router to the one supplied by my broadband provider.

My other devices connect ok because they use an older system ( the 'n' one).

Evidently there looks to be a problem with backward compatibility.

It was suggested that I purchase a dual band router and try 5GHZ.

This is a too expensive option at the moment especially after flogging out for a new machine.

I suppose an Apple router would be compatible but why fork out so much money unless you could be absolutely sure that will work.

If really is up to modern companies to ensure their devices are backward compatible.

I would hope that this is being investigated.

Meantime it is back to turning the wifi off and then on again!

Ok this might be a solution for those with hardware alike problems.

it is not my solution. i got it from the famouse 131 pages thread. It is on page 124

    propose by BananaMacintosh

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1352518?start=1845&tstart=0

Here is how he describes the problem, which is pretty similar to my problem even if not identical

    The issue

After a while of use, the wireless internet dies. The signal strength indicator fan in the top right corner still indicates five full bars. Right Clicking on the icon and clicking on "Turn wi-fi off" makes the fan icon go blank as it should, but the previously connected to network remains in the list check marked, which it shouldnt. All other wifi networks in the area disappear from the list. The status at the top of the drop down box says "Wi-Fi: looking for networks".

Right clicking on the icon and clicking on "Turn wifi-off" makes the icon go blank, as it should. Right-clicking on the icon and clicking on "Turn Wifi-On" does not enable the wifi. The fan icon stays blank, which it shouldnt. The previously "connected to" network remains checkmarked, but there is no connection to the internet.

Putting the laptop to sleep with the lid and waking it again results in five faded bars, but now no wifi networks can be found, and there is no connection to the internet. The issue occured round once a day at the beginning. By saving my work and rebooting the laptop, the issue has been manageable. However, it became unmanagable when it occured more and more often to the point where I had to save my work reboot my laptop every 1-2 hours of use.

He, as well as me and many others here, tried everything proposed.. with no luck

Than he opened the mac and found out that the cable of the airport might be damaged.

He posted the whole solution on is blog as well

    http://warrantyvoidifremoved.blogspot.com/2014/01/repairing-intermittent-wifiwir eless-on.html

Probably the back of the cable is producing too much pressure of the cable.

Everything maks terrible sense.. sometimes my connection is perfect and every morning is gone...

My cat sits on my computer most of the mornings to wake me up.

i opened the computer, cleaned the cable (ordered a new one) and it seems to work so far...

If anybody else has a cat sitting on the computer and this issue, we might call it "the cat's infamous isssue"

    good luck

I hate when people protect apple like it's a religion, apple has screw up badly and mavricks is design to control everything you do on your computer.

Mate I have had the same problem then eventually the computer would not start up. I found this video its fix my computer from a total melt down.http://youtu.be/reV-9dmBAMk

    surfersparadisegoldy,

Re-installing OS X does not fix the wireless problems in this discussion thread.

The solution provided above (wififixer.sh) worked well for me, thanks no237.  I run in in a terminal / screen session to keep it running in the background until the next reboot.

    Hi everyone,

I may have found the answer:

Here too all the nasty wifi issues. (disconecting temporarily, disconnecting and having to turn wifi off and on again, and both occuring after sleep mode) I'v deducted the following: Problem started after upgrading from Leopard straight to Mavericks on my MBP mid 2010.

At first i was disapointed in the performance of Mavericks, lots of spinning beachballs and occasional freezes. So I started by doing a fresh install (not fresh as in total wipe and rebuild whole configuration from backup but simply new install of OS) That helped nothing! still slow performance in comparison to the previous Leopard version.

Then the WIFI issue reard its head. But it only happend at home and never on the two other locations i often use. Further more the other Mac's, still on Leopard had no trouble with Wifi. (imac and MBAir, ipad, iphone's)

So i figured it must be a combination of my router and the Mavericks. My router is part of a digital tv reciever thingy called Samsung media box and is powered by cable for internet, phone and Digital tv.

After trying all the tips & trics mentioned here and elswhere on the web i decided to dive in to my router using this guide for reference on how to set all the 'nuts and bolds'

untill now, after setting some values to the ones required in the article I've had no trouble with disconecting.

So if in dispair go here first: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628 I know its only untill Mountain Lion but it seemed to work on Mav. aswell

Than go here to set the router straight: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199

If this is indeed the fix it would explain Apples lacking to deal with it, hence they allready have...

Does your Samsung Media box support 5 Ghz wireless? If so, that may be why you were able to get it to work.

The problem is with routers that only use 2.5 Ghz wireless which conflicts with Bluetooth.

It does. And i have swaped from 2.5 to the 5 GHz variant so maybe that's why it now works fine (so far)

But i doubt that Bluetooth is the issue with me because i've always had it switched off even when on 2.5 GHz
