If your iPod battery is not fully charging, I recommend restarting the device first:

If the behavior continues, next restore it to factory settings:

Mar 25, 2014 5:34 PM in response to Nunners19by Kenichi Watanabe,Also, if you are connecting it to a laptop, make sure it is connected to its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
If you have not in a while, shut down (power off) the computer. Disconnect all USB devices (you can leave standard keyboard and mouse connected if used). Do the iPod Reset mentioned above. Start up computer and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer, by itself.
One more thing you can try (on the iPod) is to play the iPod unattended, until it stops playing due to low power. Try turning it ON again and playing it. If it plays, let it play until it stops playing again. Repeat until it no longer turns back ON. Then, immediately connect it to power and recharge fully.
