THIS is exactly the question I have, turningtest2. If anyone has an answer, it would be much appreciated!

It was a somewhat rehtorical question as I've provided links to such tools in the user tip I'd posted a little earlier in the thread. Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

There is a rash of not-too-subtle advertising posts for media recovery tools at the moment. I also recall you might have enthusiastically posted much the same thing to a number of threads in quick succession which can set alarm bells ringing. Having followed the link through to the Detune web page I can't see anything worthy of reporting. I would, however, suggest you take a look at my Recovery tip becuase there are wrinkles in there that aren't covered in your description, particularly when it comes to iOS devices. Detune might make a useful addition to the list of recovery tools.

Thanks for mentioning DeTune, I've added it to the list.

I was having this exact same problem myself till I figured it out.
1.) With your iPhone plugged in, click on the iPhone button near the top right of iTunes next to iTunes Store.

    2.) Click "On This iPhone"

    3.) Click "Add To"

4.) Then you can drag music to your phone from your albums, songs list, playlists, etc.
Hope that can indeed help you transfer music from iPhone to iTunes successfully! If I didn't clarify it enough, let me know!

Open up iTunes, Go into File, pick "add folder to library", find your "my music" folder, and add it.

Or, if your My Music folder is on your desktop, drag and drop it on your desk top to iTunes. Either way should work.

If it doesn't, better check what's in your music folder.

To transfer anything not purchased from the iTunes Store, you need to use a 3rd-party utility.  Here are two that will do the job:

I have the same problem I've looked up and I'm trying to understand if it works. My laptop crashed so I lost everything that was on it. I've redownloaded itunes and I'm just scared of synchronizing my folders as I might lose everything. Not much for the music as I can always get that back ... but i made a bunch of albums for my pictures that was synched to my old desktop. Now if I can't add or modify the albums without the risk of having them all deleted. Knowing that many of those pictures are my only copy i'm really trying to find out how to do this. It would really suck if I can't get them out of my phone.

I just recently purchased a new PC (NOT Mac) and want to transfer all of my music files from the library on my phone, to the itunes library on my laptop. Most of the music on my iphone wasn't purchased from the itunes store but rather downloaded from a free music app, so it's not just as easy as pushing "add purchased". any suggestions?

I posted this before and it got removed.... probably for "advertising" or some crap.... I'm not trying to sell anything, I'm just trying to help. So I'm posting it again in hopes that it makes someone's day

The first thing you need to do (FOR MAC ONLY) is to go here and download this free program (trust me, I'm usually hesitant on downloading stuff, but this program is a life saver!). The download took a total of maybe 10 seconds... user friendly and extremely simple program, as you'll soon find out.

    http://www.headlightsoft.com/detune/downloads.html

Once you've successfully installed DeTune, run the program! Once you connect your device, it will automatically show what device is connected. You're ready...

Step One: Connect your iPhone to your laptop (USB) - ignore iTunes if it opens, but CANCEL any sync that may occur (if it doesn't; even better!)

Step Two: In DeTune, it should automatically recognize your device (iPhone) and show all of the data in an iTunes-style display. On the left-hand side, you'll see tabs for Music, Podcasts, etc. (JUST LIKE iTUNES) Step Three: THIS STEP IS NOT NECESSARY, but I highly recommend it to keep all of your stuff organized: Create a new folder on your desktop (title it whatever, I used "iPhone Transfers")

Step Four: In DeTune, select everything you want to transfer. DRAG AND DROP it into the folder you made on your desktop... wait for the copying to complete.

Step Five: Stare at the screen in complete awe and amazement as all of your music is now comfortably sitting on your desktop waiting to be imported into your iTunes music library!

My files were in m4a format, so you may not be able to simply drag and drop. Import them into iTunes via FILE ---> ADD TO LIBRARY, then select the files.... Don't know why you can't just drag and drop, but that works just the same.

I hope this helped! I know I was in the same boat for quite a while, and am VERY pleased with this program. I bet my post disappears within a week

Good luck and Happy New Year!!!

The iPhone like all iDevices has never been intended as a backup of your media. Use the backup of the old computer or the old computer to move all your media to the new computer.  There is no reason to involve the iDevice until the content has been moved.
