Q: Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update.

Am I the only one who seems to be experiencing this? My iphone 5S battery seem to drain much faster than usual, and charge longer. I heard that the new update is supposed to increase battery life, and read comparison threads regarding other iphones that are capable of a much better battery life than mine.

I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so. Is this normal? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I am mostly using 3g, and applications that require more processing such as tumblr (graphics and gifs) as well safari? I'm just worried that my battery may be draining to quick, despite the update which's supposed to make it much better according to many people.

Thanks.

Guys I too had the same fast drain battery problem BUT NOT NOW!!

    HOW???

1 my phone was in warranty.

2 took my phone to Apple authorised service centre

3 phone kept for observation for the above problem

    4 problem confirmed.

5 replaced with a brand new iPhone 5s on the third day.

6 best part is that the new phone has IOS 7.0.4

your mobile not in warranty ??  Means iPhones are country wise locked device!! If u don't buy your phone in your country, u can't not avail the free 1 year service !!!

Thing is 7.1 patched alot of security bugs, so you need the update. My 5s seems to be getting about the same as before, first few days it went down faster but with light use i got three days out of it and 6 hours usage. Here is the list of security fixes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6162

Do a clean installation. This OTA update is just a little patch compared to the 1.X gb update, there must be something. It is convinient, but there is nothing better than a clean installation. It is a pain because you have to back up your files and delete everything, but it is the only way to have good battery life. I was being lazy until I decided to do it and now my iphone 5 running ios 7.1 has better battery life than before, it was also getting very hot. As far as I was told by an Apple Store tech if you restore from a backup make sure you use the one from iCloud instead.

I am updating here based on my last post.

Since I peformed the reset > reset all to return the 5s to its defaults and and then restored from my iTunes backup on my PC, this appears to have solved my 5s battery draining 1% every 10 mins which surfaced when I did an OTA upgrade of 7.06 -> 7.1  Proceeding forward, I have only turned back certain apps so I cannot be sure which if all / any are the culprits or if it is like I suggested, FW best practice is reset system to defaults.. etc.. YMMV.   Cheers.

After trying all of the suggestions, letting battery drain, etc..etc..nothing had resolved this issue for me. Spoke to Apple yesterday who wants to replace my phone but is this going to resolve my issue?

My Iphone 4S battery is draining 2x faster after update. This is obviously an issue. Apple, when will the fix be available? Btw, I shut off my cellular connection and it still is draining 2x faster.

OK here goes once more.  Things to do to get battery life as good or better than 7.0.x.  3 iPhone 5s devices are getting better battery life than before.

    1. Hard reset hold both buttons until Apple logo appears.

    2. Restore from an iTunes sync and backup.  This made a difference for me, battery life got much better.

    3. Limit push notifications to those you really need.

    4. Limit location services to those you really need, and watch to see if the indicator comes up.

    5. Get the app System Activity Monitor to look for a runaway process that is using a lot of CPU.

    6. Suggestion by others to reset all settings.

    7. Suggestion by others that iCloud may be involved, and to try to turn off some iCloud settings.

    8. Limit or turn off 'background app refresh'.

    9. Add apps back in carefully to identify an offending app that is causing CPU or network activity that kills battery life.

If you haven't tried every single one of these, please do not post that battery life is terrible.

    Nate

I did everything, reset, hard reset, reset phone to brand new. Battery drainage is still the same. Apple jacked up something on the iOS 7.1 Software update????

@DriftMy5.0GT did you do everything mentioned by Nathan in his message?

In my case it was a bug with an app that caused the battery drain. I also noticed that the use and stand-by time were exactly the same which is ofcourse not correct. This was all caused by this app which was using GPS tracking all the time. Unfortunately an app such as System Activity Monitor did not indicate that in my case but someone posted this solution on a Dutch forum that the previous version of the app 'Scoupy' had a bug and caused this battery drain.

    - Is you use/stand-by time exactly the same?

    - Also make sure that e-mail is fetched (e.g. every hour) or set to manual instead of pushed.

    - Do you have a good carrier reception? Have you tried to manual set your carrier within your iPhone instead of the 'automatic'?

    - Have you checked if the timezone is set to manual instead of automatic and see if this makes a difference in battery use?

If you haven't tried every single one of these, please do not post that battery life is terrible.

The OTA update needs 1.9 GB room on your iPhone, its  a compressed file, its essentially the same update. Many have found resetting all settings (not wiping your iPhone) has helped. Sometimes just a hard reset helps. Make sure you have no apps running in the background and always have the phone plugged in during OTA updates and it should not cause any issues. Of course there always going to be exceptions. Also the way background App Refresh has changed in 7.1 before if the app using it was closed by swiping it up when double clicking the home button that closed the app refresh, in 7.1 the app will always refresh no matter what now, as it should do.

Just off the phone with Apple who confirms that this is a known issue but not happening to everyone's phone? My choices given to me were to continue to get a replacement phone until it is resolved or wait until a software update comes out. How could this be? I asked if the cell phone carriers were aware and the person did not know. What kind of service is this Apple?
