Q: Software update 6.1 fails continuously on my 2nd gen Apple TV. NEVER had issues previously. 6.1 includes an Airplay upgrade for 3rd gen devices only. Perhaps installation is not possible on gen 2 as bundled. Any other gen 2 users experiencing this issue?

No problem with update on my system (2nd gen). Is your router up to date?

You can check istumbler or netstumbler to get a report of your network.

Or you may want to try via ethernet to update, or connect to iTunes using micro usb.

I too have the problem with my 2nd Generation Apple TV.

I do not even get a message telling me the update failed. Everything seems to be going OK and then about 60% of the way into Step 2 of 2 the Apple TV reboots.

On checking the software version the update did not happen. I have tried about 20 times now over the past 4 weeks.

Have you checked the above suggestions?

Having the same problem at school installing version 6.1.  Can't update any of our Apple TV Gen 2!  HELP!  It will look like it is installing and then fails repeatedly.  Even after a complete reset it continues to fail.  Current installed version is 6.0.2. 

If it's a school network there may be something blocking it, talk to someone in the IT dept

Unfortunately I am the entire tech department.  Firewall is not filtering that IP address.  Other devices like iPads are updating with no issues.

Check any security software. If connecting wirelessly try via ethernet. Have there been any other streaming issues with ATV?

From what I can tell security software is off for that particular IP address.  No other issues streaming with Apple TV. 

Have you connected via Ethernet? If possible try connecting to a computer to restore via iTunes

Got it working.  You can't have BOTH the power cord plugged into Apple TV AND the mini-usb connected to a Windows computer using iTunes!.  Once I unplugged the power cord the Apple TV was recognized in iTunes.  Go figure...

Yep, only the 3rd gen needs power connected during the restore process. Glad it's working.
