Q: Cloning Snow Leopard from old iMac onto New iMac with Mountain Lion.

Hi all.

My old late 2006 intel iMac (2.1Ghz, 24" white) packed in a few weeks back (most likely GPU fail, but that's another topic!).

I've picked up a good deal on a second hand machine (funds wouldn't stretch to brand new model, but iMac definitely required):

2.7Ghz, 2011 i5, 1TB, 4gb RAM (will increase that) running mountain lion.

Ran a few tests on the old machine and the Hard Drive looked absolutely fine (was new just over 18 months ago) and could be accessed via another machine.

That was running Snow Leopard (upgrade from original OSX back in 2006) and easily ran FCP and Logic Pro post upgrade to SL.

What I would like to do really is clone my old hard drive (and I have a time machine back up on an external drive) onto this new machine.  However, I'm not quite sure whether I'd lose Mountain Lion (if my old s/w such as Logic Pro 7 and FCP suite will run ok on ML I'd like to keep it as I quite like it.

Not having any discs with this iMac (Mountain Lion not requiring them), would I be able to re install Mountain Lion if I'd cloned a Snow Leopard drive onto it?

Apologies if this is an obvious question!!  If I could still run FCP and Logic successfully on Mavericks, I might even upgrade to that also (not sure yet!).

Given the price of the thunderbird cables I'll be using a FW800-FW400 (cost 4x as less) to transfer.  I'll probably use 'super duper' to clone.

Am I along the righ lines folks?

Many thanks.

Here is a thread that indicates that Logic 7, when updated to version 7.2.1 will run in Mt Lion:

So in Mavericks it should probably run...

Thanks Michael.  I havent, as yet, had chance to fire Logic up in either the SL partition or the Mavericks partition - I'll report back on both fronts.  This also applies to my version of FCP5 (from the Final Cut Studio).  Installed from original disks but required Rosetta for download - again, I'll try and open and use in both SL and Mavericks, but I'm not holding much hope for it running in the latter OS.

    As an update:

I've now migrated all my files and folders (via snow leopard migration assistant) on this 2011 iMac from the 2006 iMac (the 2006 seems fine but I have the permanent grey/white screen meaning I can only access it remotely).

Again, I haven't had time to attempt a last resort hardware fix on that (replacement GPU far too costly).

I've only migrated to one SL partition, keeping the other one as pure as possible.  I've then upgraded the migrated SL partition to Mavericks (since using Mountain Lion for a week or two, I really got to like it over SL - Mavericks isn't that much different).

I've noticed that on one User Log in (the User log in I migrated wholly from the 2006 iMac) it's running a bit slower (occasional beach balling - safari isn't very well behaved) than the none User migrated Log in (both in Mavericks).  There was afair amount of data that came over and I could do with a clean up/tidy.  Plenty of apps/software I probably don't need.

This partition (question coming up - please advise if I need to create new thread?) is 500gb and the data that came over was nigh on 300gb.

I'm also going to upgrade the RAM to 16gb (currently 4gb) which might help.

The partition query: I was wondering if it was possible to alter the size of each partition once created.  I will barely use the SL partition (probably just for FCP if I can't work it in Mavericks and then all my video files will be on an external drive).  I should've really carried this out pre migration etc - Mavericks on 750gb and SL on 250gb (if not smaller).  I read a post discussing going into ROOT to alter this, but I haven't yet looked into it any further.

The other query is (again, I'll probably create a new thread for this) is backing up a machine which has more than one partition (the 2006 iMac had one 1TB partition - backed up straight to a 1TB ext time machine drive).

Other than that, everything is working perfectly - effectively have my old machine back, but in new H/W and 'tarted up' OS!

    Many thanks folks!!

Yes, I recommend two separate new queries for those two questions. Keep the questions focused on just the facts needed for their resolution.

Let us know the links over to these new posts, as I am also curious how they will be resolved.

Looks like all the theoretical advice we've been giving you is working out well in practice!  That is very satisfying!

Really? You probably know more about that than I would - I'm not sure if one with 10.7.3 or later would boot with SL?

    From this:

I now have confirmation, from this and other threads, that all of the 2011 iMacs will boot and run Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or greater), with the only possible exception of the stripped-down, educational market only, i3 late-2011 iMac that initially shipped with Lion.

It is doubtful that we will see many of the members of this forum with questions about that particular model.  If and when we do, maybe we can get confirmation one way or the other about Snow Leopard and that model.

Here is a post advising how to change the sizes of two partitions:
