Q: When I'm on my homescreen my data is constantly used, when I go into an app the spinning sign goes, as it should. But why is it being used for no reason? I'm scared of going over my data allowance. Thanks

I'm so confused as to how to get this to go

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1

Check Settings > Cellular and it will tell you which apps are using cellular data.

Are all your apps closed? If I understand right, some apps can pull data if they are running in the background.

When I go into settings I don't get a cellular toggle, could that be because I'm in the UK?

    No, that is puzzling.

You say you have an iPhone 5S running iOS 7.1.

    Under Settings, you should see:

    • Airplane Mode
    • Wi-Fi
    • Bluetooth
    • Cellular
    • [possibly] Personal Hotspot
    • Notification Center
    • ... etc.

I've found it now, mine was called "mobile", this problem has only occurred recently so I've disallowed all my new apps from cellular data but it's still using data when I'm on the homescreen

Since you've disallowed your (presumably all) apps, check Settings > [Mobile or Cellular] > System Services to learn what is using the data.

Try shutting all apps that may be running in the background.  Tap the Home button twice to open the multitasking window. Swipe up on the screen shots for the apps that are in there.

Restart your phone.  Hold down both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time and wait for the Apple logo to appear and wait for phone to "reboot".

Reset Network Settings.  Settings => General => Reset => Reset Network Settings.  You will have to re-enter any wifi passwords you may have in memory, but this will clear your network settings and connect you to the nearest/strongest cell tower.

If this doesn't work, try doing a Reset All Settings reset.  Same place you went for the Network Settings.  You won't lose any content, but you will have to reset all the settings you may have turned on or off.  This includes email, i.e. manually fetch vs Push..

I have the very same problem. This only happens on the homescreen. Ive downloaded Onavo Count and it doesnt show any app using data. In Cellular no app has used data. Yet data manager is saying that ive used 70MB in the last hour and a half!!!!!

I am also getting this happen much more since I upgraded to ios8.

I reset all counters under Settings--> mobile and then went to the home screen.

The icon next to signal strength started spinning so I left it.

Then I checked the counters and it was system services Networking and Set Time/Location.

These were set to use location services and mobile data before but in previous ios versions it was not checking so often,

Will turn off system services as time/location is not needed and networking on/off does not seem to affect mobile signal capture.

Very annoying. Apple seem intent on offering a worse and worse experience.
