Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update.

Am I the only one who seems to be experiencing this? My iphone 5S battery seem to drain much faster than usual, and charge longer. I heard that the new update is supposed to increase battery life, and read comparison threads regarding other iphones that are capable of a much better battery life than mine.

I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so. Is this normal? Is it perhaps due to the fact that I am mostly using 3g, and applications that require more processing such as tumblr (graphics and gifs) as well safari? I'm just worried that my battery may be draining to quick, despite the update which's supposed to make it much better according to many people.

Thanks.

I decided about an hour later to start a chat to get someone else to see what they said. They said it WAS NOT a confirmed issue and suggested I reset my phone as new and reinstall everything monitoring the battery. I was so frustrated I just said thanks and disconnected.

How do you clear data usage & history from an iPhone??

Go to the Settings app > General > Set again (or similar it's all the way down in General) > various settings which could remove everything (Reset all settings) or only remove e.g. networksettings depending on the option you choose.

I have reset my phone and done a clean install. Battery drainage is still the same. The phone is very warm and it drains rapidly I have turned off all features no good!! I hate Apple now!!!

In the case of my wife and I the battery drain problem began with iOS7.0.6. and continued also after updating to iOS7.1. I also did all these things and had no luck in resolving the matter untill someone said it may be an app process which is still hanging and/or using constant GPS/data and keep running in the background (although i had GPS set to off and also refresh in background was turned off).

It was a bug with an app that caused the battery drain with our two iPhone 4S see also my posts in this other topic. I also noticed that the use and stand-by time were exactly the same which is ofcourse not correct. This was all caused by this app which was using GPS tracking all the time. Unfortunately an app such as System Activity Monitor did not indicate that in my case but someone posted this solution on a Dutch forum that the previous version of the app 'Scoupy' had a draining data/GPS bug since iOS7.0.6 and still in iOS7.1 and caused this battery drain. Since removing the app the battery use is back to normal (was 14 hours maximum during drain period) and is now again at least 24 hours or even 1,5 day depending on our use of the phone. It is also again indicated at Settings > General > Use > Stand-by and Use time are different again.

Ofcourse it's a long shot that you have this app installed (it's Dutch) but others also mentioned that it was Viber and Pango+ and Isracard which caused the battery drain. But ofcourse it could be another app in your case. Please dive into the diagnostics logs i know it's a pain to search there! I'm saying this to see which app process is running since ages and could cause the battery drain.

In that case you need to dive into the Settings > General > Info > Diagnostics and Use >

Diagnostics and Use >logs per app to determine which app isn't closed although you turned off your phone (or even in my case reset to factory settings without backup). It's unfortunately pretty hard to find the app that is causing this.

I wish Apple would come up with a better way (instead of searching through diagnostics logs) to determine which app(s) are causing the battery drain (constant running in background) so more users could easier find out which app(s) has/have a huge bug. So you know that you could remove that app(s) from your iPhone completely and see if that resolves the problem. In our cases it did resolved the battery drain. I did not look for apps which show this but none of them indicated Scoupy as the problem so I was lucky another user already searched through the diagnostics logs and installed/removed every app to determined which was the app that caused the battery drain.

I would also advise you to look especially at the main battery using options (aside from Push notifications from apps) which are:

# Settings > Refresh apps on background. I would suggest to completely turn that off

# Settings > Privacy > Location tracking > Only Maps, Google Maps are allowed to use location tracking in my case, you could also turn that off completely or be very selective which apps can use your GPS.

# Settings > E-mail, calendar .. >deselect 'Push' and set it to either Fetch e.g. once an hour for all separate e-mail accounts you have. In your case you could set it to Manual so you won't use any data as long as you won't open your E-mail app and manually download e-mails.

pacorob, get the app System Activity Monitor to see if there is excess CPU activity. If there is, one by one kill apps by double clicking the home button and swiping the app out, then check again.

I don't have the problem anymore as said in my previous post in this topic.

I do have that System Activity Monitor (paid version) installed and also another app called System Status - activity monitor (paid version) but both did not show the app which caused the drain at the time.

I like these app much more because the have a better view in showing the process (especially apps) that are running:

- 'ActMonitor' by Aeonika

- 'System Status Monitor - Battery...' by (Digifun Studios)

In the end a user mentioned it on another forum that the app we were using could cause the drain and it did. After removing that app it was resolved.

Thanks for the info, Pacorab! I did try to check in "Diagnostics and Use" and couldn't find any item which said "logs per app" to check. If I downloaded the app System Status Monitor - Battery...' by (Digifun Studios) that you mentioned, would that serve the same purpose? Would I be able to use one of those apps to find out which app might be running in the background that could be causing the battery drain?

Hi!

I have the same issue with the battery life. I charged my battery until full about 100% and unpulgged it. I turn on data (3G), turned of motion effects and after about an hour of use my battery is down to 50%-40% it only lasts for about 2 hours if i continue using it.

If you check Settings > General > Info > Diagnostics and Use > Diagnostics and Use > you should find all kind of logs files per app there which you could open and read but it's very hard to determine and check all those logs. If you can't find it with the below app running in the background you could also still look at the apps which use e.g. GPS and turn that off per app (and maybe also remove the app from your iPhone) to see if one of those apps is running constantly in the background. I would also suggest to turn off 'refresh in background' completely as mentioned in a previous message from me in this topic.

The app does indicate apps that are running at the moment you check the app. Within the app you can see at 'CPU and Processes' the 'Running applications'. What do you see there? In my case i didn't see the Scoupy app which caused the problem at the time but maybe you do see an app indicated which you aren't using but is draining your battery.

Have you tried these things already i mentioned earlier in this topic?

Pacorab, on the Digifun app, the only Running Application that shows is "Mail". Under "Other Running Processes" there are lots of line items, however, none are app names (more like "kernal_task", "fseventsd", etc.).

All of your other suggestions (turn off Background Refresh, limit location tracking to just the maps, email set to Fetch) I had already been doing for a while.

The one thing I haven't done though is Reset All Settings. That's just going to be too much of a pain to re-enter all my network passwords and other items I need to reset.

I used to get about 8 hours battery usage out of my phone, now its down to 4-5 hours.

Has anyone else had problems with dropped calls? Ever time I put the phone up to my face to take a call, it hangs up. Didn't notice battery drainage, but that is a problem also. And it deleted a favorites list from one of my apps. Need to go back to previous version until they fix this one. I have iPhone 4.

I have tried all the options over 1 week on Iphone 5 and it's clear there is a major issue with 7.1 The ONLY way to restore battery life to anything like it was before the 7.1 "failure" is to switch off mobile data and only use wifi. Which kind of defeats the reason for having the phone on the move. with mobile data the life decreases around 1% in 1-2 minutes. thats even if you switch off other features such as location sevices and background refresh. There is something the "nerdy techies" have screwed up with this 7.1 and they need to sort it soon because by word of mouth and the internet Iphone is getting some bad publicity over this.
