Q: How to get label colors back on Maverick?

I realize "tabs" took it's place but all my business files are predicated on a carefully organized color file system. This was an awful decision for some of us. Any new apps to fill the void?

Thank you so much for this info.  I installed XtraFinder  immediately and LOVE it!  Whew.  I was really contemplating uninstalling Mavericks and using Time Machine to 'go backwards' but it really seemed like a last resort.  Having gotten used to NOT having my label colors, now having the XtraFinder it feels almost "like home". Having this extensive "where are the label colors" conversation with everyone has been quite an interesting experience.  There are lots of us 'out there.'

The XtraFinder find is a great free alternative - lots of nice features, and the labels are back. But, call me picayune (I've been called worse), but I wish it changed the labels on the Desktop as well. I used those EXTENSIVELY, and it would be really helpful to get those.

One nice feature I do especially like is that there was an option to change the width of the columns for good. I didn't try it yet - but that'll be nice....

The desktop in a window would still show the label colors...

Agreed. It does when I open the desktop window - but that kind of defeats the purpose of saving aliases for current work on the desktop for immediate access....

I'm still holding out hope Apple fixes it. Of course, I'm still holding out hope they'll bring Firefly back on tv.... not holding my breath for either one....

Again, many thanks to abbelougee for finding this. Who says there aren't happy endings!

By the way, I emailed the creator, Tran Ky Nam to thank him/her, but got no response.

These new tiny dots really are totally useless, really miss old labels. It just boggles the mind how they could do this. Mavericks is worst Mac OS change ever for me since 1996, just makes my MacBook Air slower.

I always do that feedback form to Apple, it may help but not once have I seen it bring back something they ruined like this. So, I write here also, hoping for the unlikely but possible event that someone at Apple sees a thread with 11 pages and counting of complaints, maybe this helps a little too.

Thanks for suggestions of apps like Path Finder but I don't care for the idea of having to use some third party add-on for this, maybe I will though.

Get XtraFinder. It works. It's free. Easy to install. Took about 5 minutes. Just install, then go to Preferences to restore your colored labels. It has other features, but frankly all I care about are the file colors. They're back!

XtraFInder is brilliant and adds some nice (amazing, in fact) functionality to Finder as well as bringing back the cool coloured label on the line in list view.

Wonderfully, it also shows the coloured label in the folder sidebar....AND.....gives back those beautiful coloured folders that Apple took from us several releases ago.

Suddenly, my (Xtra)Finder looks colourful and fresh again. No more really boring grey!

By the way, XtrfaFinder gives some great extra stuff, like horizontal or vertical multi-screens, Chrome style tabs etc etc etc etc.

And......its FREE! I tried this on one (test) Mavericks system and WOW....the positive difference it makes. Might even start using Mavericks now!

Get XtraFinder if you are using Mavericks.....it just works;-)

I'm with Jim CA! But, XtraFinder's probably where I'll have to be.

I'd uninstalled it after testing, as I had something coming up and didn't want risks - but now I've got another question.

Y'see - I also did update to 10.9.2, and am finding instability (I think it's related to Time Machine going to USB 3 card, but not sure yet). In any case- I don't want even MORE instability. Have you guys been using XtraFinder with 10.9.2 yet? Is it stable? Even on high CPU/RAM processes (thinking of video renders and PS plugin processes, as that's been my scariest issues). Thanks!

I've been using XtraFinder for years, through more system upgrades than I can remember.  Never a problem.  XtraFinder runs as an app over the Finder; no hooks to interfere with other system functions.

I think these issues might be related to Mavericks rather than XtraFinder.

I found Mavericks to be a very disappointing and unperformant MacOSX release....very sloooooow.

Mavericks is NOT a joy to use at all! I went back to 10.8.5 ... but have access to a Mavericks machine to try stuff out. I'm in no hurry to use mavericks for my production stuff but I just loved XtraFinder.

Unfortunate. Maybe you are using Mavericks wrong, as you do emojis. Mavericks runs perfectly fine with or without XtraFinder for many many millions. You are one of the few exceptions so obviously have issues which need addressing. Therefore try opening your own thread to address those issues. Good luck with XtraFinder. I prefer the advanced features of Tags.

    Cheers

Stassi - I've installed xtrafinder. I have 10.9.2 Mavericks. When you install xtrafinder, it appears in the main toolbar but when I put my computer to sleep and wake it up again, the xtrafinder icon is gone. I have to double click on the app in the applications folder to get it back into the top toolbar. I've tried trashing and reinstalling but it'smade no difference. Annoying!

abbellougge.smile - thank you for that clarification. I did realize it ran as a sort of "replaement" over the Finder, but didn't realize it wasn't hooking into other processes - that helps ease my comfort.

Brian.nolan - I've never hated a Mac OS release this much - but only have it because for my business, I need to be able to run some very new software that gave me the option of Mt Lion or Mavericks - I figured eventually it'd all be Mavericks, so I might's well do it now... I'd been on Lion 'till then.

    Petermac87 - I think you're pretty rude

Sunnyjohn - Thank you for the input. I wasn't sure if that was just me - I'm kinda hating add-ons on my machine as all the ones with Menu Icons seem to disappear when there're too many things  in there! But, it seems that  the options are to live with the sheer joy petermac87 seems to find in Mavericks, to use Pathfinder or Forklift as additional programs (WITH menu icons, btw), wait until TotalFinder is updated (only 'cause I already once got it ina bundle, and it's essentiially the same thing as XtraFinder), or use XtraFinder.... Oy!

Still wishing Apple would do something about this - but you guys' input is helpful. Hopefully, the USB3 is my only problem...

Yes, I agree with all you say. I love Macs (and have done for years) but hated Mavericks with a passion since I installed it...it was sloooooow....and just unpleasant to use. I hate the lack of colour labels and I didn't at all like the increased visual blandness (....more awful grey).

The major point of my post is that XtraFinder is great....and free...and functionally rich. Mavericks is not so good an experience.
