If you are running Mavericks on your iMac and are having issues setting a default From: account, you may find the following article helpful:

Jul 15, 2014 12:46 PM in response to brenden dvby amityweb,Hi Brendan, thanks but they dont help. As stated the default account keeps changing. You set the default account by dragging the mail accounts under the Inbox, as described here Selecting Default Mail Account
The problem I am having is, this keeps resetting. I dont know how it decides, maybe alphabetical, because I have a Gmail account called Backup which keeps moving to the top all the time. I have dragged my main email account back to the top, but no doubt at some point Backup will move itself to the top and become the default mail account.

Jul 16, 2014 2:41 AM in response to Eric Rootby amityweb,Ah, that seems to be working. Looks like there's mixed instruction online. It doesnt address the issue why the order keeps changing in the left under Inbox, but at least when it does change the order, messages I send are not sent from the top one in the list anymore.

Jul 22, 2014 12:21 AM in response to amitywebby amityweb,Actually this is not working either! It works for choosing the default FROM address, but because my "backup" email account has been moved to the top again, when I send email the Sent mail goes from my backup account, and into the backup account Sent mail items, and not the account I want to send mail from! So then my Sent items are not on my phone for example, as I dont have the backup account on my phone.
This is unbelievably frustrating. I will have to file a bug report, its got to be a bug why accounts keep changing to alphabetical order on their own at various times.

Aug 20, 2014 12:30 AM in response to amitywebby amityweb,I can see when it changes the ordering now... whenever I change an email accounts settings in Mail Preferences and click Save, it changes the account ordering to alphabetical. And the top one is the one used by default to send email.
