Q: GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Guess I'll just use integrated only when I'm not using my monitor, and switch to discrete when I am using it and deal with the panics if i get them.

Both of our computers must be twins since I get the same exact message log.

Actually, your MBP is a few years newer but you do have a GPU problem.

Yes, its a 2012 Retina 15inch model. I'm getting more confident that this is a harware problem, but some of the discussions make me think it can possibly be something with Mavericks. So even if it is a harware problem is there any chance of getting a replacement (and saving $600)?

I'll certainly try to factory rest my computer.

Will the gfxCardStatus app which you posted earlier in this post, help me aviod using the GPU card?

It should cut down the frequency of panics, but it won't eliminate them. You might want to look into this. I haven't tried it, but it looks like it could solve the problem.

The problem with the 2010 MacBook Pro 6,2 is a possible Latent Defect in the graphics chip itself. That defect was there from the day of manufacture, but gets worse as we install later versions of Mac OS X and it stresses the chip differently. The solution for the samples of MacBook Pro 6,2 that show FAILED in the Apple VST Test is to REPLACE the Graphics chip (or replace the motherboard).

That re-soldering service MAY be valuable for later models such as the 2011 models that are having flaky problems without any other recourse.

That ebay repair service sounds interesting, I'd be a little worried about sending my laptop to them and hoping they can solve the problem... Definitely seems cheaper than going the apple route.

I can also chime in and say that gfxcard has DRASTICALLY reduced the number of panics I've had. I use the integrated graphics when I'm at work, and have to switch to discrete graphics when I'm at home using my second monitor. I've had probably two crashes in the past ten days or so that I've used it, and it seems like it happens more so when my macbook is cold (usually from sitting in my car for ~2 hours while I'm at the gym).

Like I said, I don't have personal experience with that service, but he does offer to replace the chip for $30 - $45. I did think the issue on the 2010's was largely related to the solder job, but either way it looks like that vendor is attempting to address the issue.

I would not recommend that procedure as a fix for 2010 MacBook Pro 6,2.

If it fails the VST test, it is not a soldering problem, and will not improve with this treatment.

As I said though, part of the service is replacing the GPU if required. I'm just curious as to why you think that wouldn't work. I don't have stock in the place or anything.

I do not think this service replaces the graphics chip for FREE, and I do not think they will find the defect. The only diagnostic that finds the Latent Defect is in Apple stores.

I think you would get an excellent re-soldering and be back to exactly where you started, with your wallet US$129 lighter.

But I DO think this is worth considering for 2011 models that are being difficult. I own two 2011 models, one early and one late 2011, and neither has show these sorts of problems -- knock on wood.
