Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

Ahh, but Automatic software installing was introduced in Mavericks. You could download in Mt Lion, but it wouldn't install until you manually allowed it.

Besides, going from Mt Lion to Mavericks isn't an "update" it's considered an "upgrade". Little more evolved than a simple click of the "ok" button.

Why are you telling me this? Automatic Software Installing has been around since Snow Leopard. If you choose to use Automatic Downloading then it will ask to install that download upon reboot. And where have I mentioned Upgrade v's Update to the poster? I do not understand the relevance of your response.

Guess what my system automatically up graded me to maverick 10.9.2.

The. Turn off Automatic Updates in System Preferences > App

Store As it is you must have it set to Auto Download so that is what it did.

    Pete

Because you replied to it. The OP was under the impression that he was on Mt Lion 10.8.X. Why he posted in Mavericks is beyond me. But not he's saying that he has 10.9.X which he assumes was done automatically. Which can't be done, as it's considered an upgrade.

But it still stand that automatic installing of software wasn't introduced until Mavericks. I have Mt Lion on my MBP and I don't see anything under System Preferences---> Software Update (now App Store) that pertains to automatic upgrade installs. Just Download newly available updates in the background which will notify you when download is done. Then System data files and security updates shall be installed, if selected.

The above still is true in Mavericks, except it's System Preferences---> App Store---> and the addition of "Install app updates."

Things are getting worse.  Now my computer won't recognize my 500GB external flash drive.  I wonder if I have lost my data on it?  Hope not.  That is the only place I have my photos now.  The light turns on but nothing comes up on my desktop or in finder.  Any suggestions?

    Is it because of mavericks?

    For Michelle PM

Also, you mentioned adding more RAM.

Do you know where proper Mac RAM is to be purchased?

I'll give you a hint. It is NOT from any old computer retailer off of their shelves.

    Qty: 1 CT3309358

         Part Number: CT2K4G3S1067M

         Price: $91.99

Description: 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM  Upgrade for a Apple MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) System

         Line total: $91.99

This is what I bought specific for my computer.  Hope it works

    My apologize.

Yes, following the convo is quite hard in this forum. As for that ram that you purchase, it should be ok. As long as you bought it for your Mac's specs. Assuming you have the mid-2009 MacBook Pro 15 inch.

If it doesn't (you'll know as the system will try and boot, but will return 3 beeps instead indicating wrong or incompatible RAM), you will have to return it for a full refund and purchase online from the sources I listed.

Are you planning to run that Etrecheck report so we can all see what is installed for hardware and software on your system?

We are all tired of trying to figure out what you Mac issues are when you only supply us with limited info and data.

This will finally gives real pertinent information about your entire system.

Please do this and stop putting this off.

As I stated, I am almost sure that adding more physical will NOT cure you Application Memory Full error issue.

To keep track of who you are talking to, you need to hit the reply link/button for that person who is responding to you and not keep replying to yourself.

I plan to run it if I can get my Mac running again.  I have been trying to clear my computer of all Carboite files, but I have not got all of them yet.  I was following instructions given here but some of it was presented as though the reader knew what they were doing in the first place so I could not follow it exact.  I must admit though I am learning a few things along the way with the kind help of all of you guys and gals.  Right now, it appears to be running better.  I still have a lot of apps like Iphoto that will not open and I have to force quit them.

However, it won't recognize my external drive now, where my photos are located.

I appreciate your patience with me.

Once I download that program, what do I do then, and can it be removed after you guys have analyzed it.

The Etrecheck website will tell you what to do. How the program runs is automatic and set- explanatory.

It can be deleted easily once you are done with, but it is a very small program and leave a very minute footprint on your system, I would leave it installed in case it needs to be used, again, in the future.

My advice, if your external hard drive is shown on your Mac desktop, drag its icon to the OS X Trash to eject the drive and its icon, then disconnect that external drive from your system while we try to figure out what is wrong with your Mac, alone.

I wonder if booting in safe boot would help with the application memory problem. Not as a permanent fix of course,  it just enough to run the Etrecheck.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564

Basically shut down the Mac as normal. Once shut down press the power button as normal. But immediately press and hold the Shift key until it says it's in Safe boot. Could take a minute or two.

    readingsully,

Is there any reason for not posting your entire EtreCheck report?

MichelPM asked for it in the third post 7 days ago & others have also repeatedly asked.

It leaves us 'looking around in the dark' if we can't get an idea of what is installed, you don't seem to have the experience with cleaning up a Mac, so let those that do offer help.

You keep ignoring the best advice here… post a full EtreCheck report & people who know more about the software will try to help you remove/ fix it, otherwise this will just keep running on and on…

Currently, the OP says her Mac is not running right now for some reason.

If that is true, I do not know how she is cleaning off her computer of Carbonite files.

Seems like you would need a working Mac to do this.

    Don't know.
