Q: Deleting Old Email Addresses From Cache?

Two of my contacts have changed there email addresses, and I updated it in contacts, however as I begin to type there email in the "To" section I get a list of emails addresses popping up including the ones I deleted from my contacts.  I assume they are coming from some kind of cache, but have not found a way to delete those emails that pop up.  It's a nice feature, but if the emails are not correct it really does not help.

    To clear annoying old email addresses:

     

    Open a new email message to that person

     

    From the drop down menu of email addresses find the one you want to delete

     

    Click the blue circle next to it on the right

     

    Select "Remove From Recents"

     

     

    Done

    Old email addresses are easily deleted on my Iphone

     

    Start a new message as usual

     

    Any time an annoying address pops up select the blue circle to the right of it

     

    At the top choose "Remove"

     

    Then choose "Remove From Recents" at the bottom

     

    Done

    well Steve, it took me long to reply to your post, because I wanted to avoid starting a flame war here, but I cannot help myself.

     

    First of all, your approach to tell people, what they should do to avoid the problem, instead of giving a solution to it is typical for those who fail to admit that there is none.

     

    I don't want to loose my time explaining why do I need something and by the way, not all apps in the background are inactive, some of them are being refreshed from time to time depending on your use. Flicking your thumb to close all apps in 4 seconds? Well, you either have 4 apps opened in total or your thumb is exceptionally fast. Maybe one day they are going to make it a sport discipline and you would get a medal.

    There is only one way you can be assured that if you delete an email it is gone from cache. Emails go through spotlight therefore your have to bypass spotlight.  The solution is simple. Instal mymail through google, and it combines all your emails. If you send and receive emails that bypass spotlight there is no problem with cache. There are several other providers whch you can use, some charge for the app. But mymail app ls free. I feel I have won the battle with Apple because Apple simply ignore ths security issue.

    The easier way is to simply select remove from recents. See the procedure above.

     

    I'll repeat it here.

     

    Start an email

    Select the annoying address you want removed

    Select info blue circle at right

    Select remove

    Select remove from recents down at bottom

     

    Done

    That is not the easier way, that is the only way unfortunately and also very tedious one if you have hundreds of email contacts. The easier way would be one simple button "clear cache" to delete all at once.

     

    The only alternative to going and deleting the unwanted email contact from recent list one by one is to bring the device to its original state by resetting it in iTunes.

     

    Then if you do not want to mix business with private just use third party app for private email and ios mail app for business or vice versa. This is how I make sure that each message goes to the correct inbox.

    Glad that works for you.

     

    The posts are asking how to delete a single or few bad email addresses.

     

    Deleting them as you find your mistakes is faster and easier that deleting all your auto fill addresses. Because now you have to reselect each one. You are suggesting a way to clear the cache which is good for other reasons but not the best way to remove one or two addresses you typed wrong.

    I also  wanted to remove one of the email addresses from my prevoius email addresses which automaticaly suggested in the list. I often mixed up the names and send email to the wrong person. So I found this thread. While reading it I went back to my mac mail and found Previous Recipients Under Window in the main menu bar. clicked on it and it opened all the emails I recieved in cache. So I found the one I wanted to remove and removed it from the list.

     

    Now that address doesn't appear automatically when I put the first letters of my other recipient. Mystery solved for me. If this solution doesn't relate to this thread, hope it at least helps those who have the same problem as me.

    I don't get a little blue circle next to the offending cached email address.  There is a + which only allows me to add other addresses to that particular email I am crafting.

     

    What am I missing please?

    I just tested this. You only see a lower case letter i inside a circle if the email address is cached ie not in your current Contacts. To test this, try deleting a Contact then emailing the same Contact. Their name will appear or auto fill because its cached. At this point you should see the lower case letter i inside a circle mentioned earlier.

    I'm sure the original poster was referring to iOS 5. Similarly all posts resolving the problem are on later versions of iOS.  Unfortunately the original iPad is not supported on iOS 6 or above which leaves all users of iPad 1 in the same position. The answer is not to buy a new iPad as this is just absurd.

     

    My option will be to try mymail app as suggested in the later posts. If anyone knows an app that can clean up spotlight then I'd happily use that to keep the use consistent.

    i know how frustrating it is when you could have literally thousands of unwanted email in duplicate in cache.

     

    I got rid of the problem, but you need to reset your iPad and start afresh. I then installed Mymai from google (SeeMy letter on the 12th January) this is tthe only way possible you will rid the problem for good.

     

    There is no little button or circles on the iPad. There may be on the iPhone, but on the iPad mail goes through spotlight and there is absolutely no other way to get rid of these mails. My friend was in New York and went to the

    Apple shop, and they could not get rid off them. Some people don't seem to mind, but I think it could be a security risk when Banks or other organisations send you mail.

     

    MYmail is is absolutely free, and you can have several email addresses, when you delete your mail it is gone for good. I can now enjoy using my IPad because I am in charge of what I want to keep or get rid of.

     

    if the problem is annoying you as much as it annoyed me, then go ahead and give it a try. But you need to reset your IPad, but you can always save anything like music or pictures through your computer, then put them back after you reset your IPad. This is the only way possible because I have rung Apple but no Joy.

    I'm annoyed there isn't a way to delete old contacted emails. I no longer want to see them as an option. How do i get rid of them? On newer iPhones you have a blue arrow next to each contact in the Dropbox as you type an address, that's where you can choose what to do with that contact. On the older one, like I have, I don't have that option. They're stuck there. How do I get rid of them? Please help me apple!

    I also want to delete ALL of the cached email addresses, not just one at a time.  The reason is in my case I had my wife signed in on her iPad to my iCloud account at first.  Then she created her own iCloud account and signed into that, but the email app still has all of my email addresses in the cache.  There must be a thousand of them, so deleting them one at a time is just not practical.  And I really don't want to reset and rstore the iPad to get rid of the cache.  I hope this gets fixed in iOS 8.

    Thanks helpful even if it is one address at once. To emphasise Crash2Plan the old email address must not be in the contacts otherwise no i blue circle appears. The blue circle indicates it is in recent but not in contacts. Does mean you need two step procedure remove old email from contacts and then remove from recent. Would be good if when email removed from contacts it was also removed from recents and this would mean users did not have to get into this complexity. No good suggesting to apple though as suggestions seem to go into a black hole.
