Q: Pages 5 features checklist

As you go through the new Pages 5 can you please add an added, missing or altered features here please.

I will start with some culled from the general discussions and if you could correct any errors add them:

Added

1. Right to Left text ie Arabic, Farsi & Hebrew. Uncertain about Pashtu

2. Single model templates. You turn off document text to get rid of the default. Not sure if this then can be mixed and matched with Word Processing templates

3. Able to share outside iCloud

Missing

1. Selecting non-contiguous text gone

2. Outline view appears gone

3. Customizable Toolbar is gone

4. Many templates appear gone

5. Captured pages gone

6. Reorganize pages by dragging gone

7. Duplicate pages gone

8. Subscript/superscript buttons gone

9. Select all instances of a Style is gone

10. Retain zoom level of document gone

11. Facing pages gone

12. Endnotes gone

13. Media Inspector can't find iPhoto library on external drive

14. Update is missing for older installations, Apple is reportedly working on a solution via a redeemable code or update on the ir Support Download site

Altered

1. Language set under Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar now document wide

2. Subscript/superscript text is now a convoluted route Gear > Advanced options > Baseline > Subscript/Superscript

3. Header appears to be multi-column

4. New file format (but still .pages?) not backwardly compatible

5. Page numbering method changed

6. T.O.C. appears buggy

7. Template file storage location moved - to where?

8. Imported older .pages files are not translating properly

9. Text language is detected automatically now

Letting you know I can't test or verify any of these as I haven't got Mavericks yet.

I've confirmed it works with Pages 5.2.  I omitted mailing address information of test contacts group because the macoxautomation.com says it is optional.  But I added the mailing address information and I've succeeded.

Pages 5.2 makes ALL objects, text boxes, etc. with an automatic text wrap. SUPER annoying...along with all the other.  I already hated that they omitted SAVE AS in previous versions.

    How is that different?

All objects in Pages '09 have wrap on by default also.

All versions of Pages, all the way back to iWork '05, have text wrap with a 12-point gutter/extra space on by default. This is nothing new in Pages 5.

Save As… "disappeared" in Lion but was brought back with Mountain Lion. Hold down the Option/alt key to see it in the File menu. It's not a Pages issue, it's an OS issue.

    Peggy

I am constantly amazed at what users believe they are seeing, or not seeing, in their software.

Just look at how many don't even notice that Pages has changed, and only stumble to something is amiss when they can't do something they used to be able to do.

I know. We keep repeating the same answers over & over & over.

Then there are those who say "I have the latest…" or "everything is updated" and it's not.

Personally, I don't use Pages 5 or Numbers 3. I just keep them to check answers. You & I know that the functionality of iWork '09 will never be restored.

...despite the ongoing reality of every subsequent update and their evidence to the contrary.  That line is so tired.  They ARE restoring the functionality, and I hate to say, I told you so.

BTW, with the current frustration of inline/floating-object-placement circus I'm having in Pages '09 RIGHT NOW this very moment, as always, I'll be really happy if that functionality is never restored.  Please don't forget that Pages '09 was far from perfect.  The way objects jump around when being resized is always a good laugh.

About restoring missing functionality - it is still not possible to find and replace hard returns (paragraph marks).

And as we have told you many, many times, …after almost 6 months of users being screwed around… barely anything has been restored and a long list of bugs keep ruining users work.

There is still no guarrantee that the vast majority of missing features will ever be restored. Apple hasn't even mentioned them.

The only guarrantee we have is that the file format is permanently trashed.

We know that Pages '09 isn't perfect, we have been giving feedback to Apple for years to fix what needs fixing.

    Instead we got Pages 5!

Apple shot the dog with the limp and has given you a free dead cat!

Apple has restored less than 5% of the missing features in over 6 months.

At that rate it will be the beginning of 2024 before we can hope to see Pages 5 back to match Pages '09…

…not that Apple has said it is going to do any such thing.

By then we will have all well and truly moved on.
