Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

I was able to open iPhoto once yesterday .  I do have the latest version of iPhoto.  9.5

I got memory warning yesterday maybe three times but several hours in between.  So that is an improvement.  But of course not perfect.

I have not luck with bookmark thing through safari.  I turned off everything I could.  All the instruction got a little confusing.

I could not start time machine because I could not get airport working.

    The memory still shows high.

That is kind of where I am.

As for the Safari and it's syncing bookmarks across your devices. To turn that off, you'll need to go into System Preferences.

    System Preferences---> iCloud---> uncheck Safari

That will disable the syncing of the book marks across your devices, such as your iPad.

Just to clear up an issue that I have been having because we have been all over the place trying to get your Mac to run well, again, do you have both an external hard drive AND a USB Flash Drive with photos on both as your backup/s?

And does your Mac see either of these?

Does the updated iPhoto launch consistently and when it does launch has it asked you, yet, to locate and update your iPhoto library?

One possible reason your Mac isn't seeing the Flash Drive is if this was a Flash Drive you were using with your PC, it may not contain the right format to use with your Mac.

DId the Mac EVER see this Flash Drive?

Is your Mac overall running any better?

Question 1 and 2 and 4:  No I have a 500 GB usb flashdrive.  Mac saw it up until two days ago.  It does not mount it now.  I went into disk utility when it was plugged in and it shows there and shows the appropriate disk usage but I am unable to open it.

Question 3:  Iphoto does open now most of the time and lo' and behold aperture also opened today for the first time.  Neither are showing the photos I want.  Neither have asked to update anything.  Iphoto is the latest version.  Apeture is version 3.5.1.

Question 5:  Yes my computer is running better.  Memory Application problems show up now as of yesterday about three times a day with a good three to four hours between...much better than every two minutes.

Note:  Back to my flashdrive USB.  I had it encrypted.  But it asked for password all the time and I got tired of it so I pushed the button offered for unencrypt.  After that the computer would not recognize it.  I did not know it had to do with Mac...just thought it meant the password.  So how can I get it encrypted and formatted again?

Ok, since iPhoto and Aperture are now opening. Can you please look to see where they are looking for the library?

Aperture---> Preferences---> General---> Library Location (Where does this lead to?)

iPhoto---> File---> Switch to Library (Where does this lead to?)

Are they the same or different? Are they located on your local boot up drive or to your external that isn't working right now?

When you post the exact location, you may replace your user name with *** if you wish.

Are you sure that it is a flashdrive, 500GB sounds more like a Hard drive.

Well, when it shows on my desktop it says flash drive.  But maybe I titled it that.  Does it matter?  It connects to my computer via USB.  It is about 3.5" x 7" x .5 inches.  It is by WD.

It's a hard drive, there are no 500GB USB flash drives.

And if there is, it'll be $1,000 plus for it.

readingsully, When you connect this hard drive to your Mac. Do you also have to plug in a power supply into it?

Is this the disk that you said was encrypted & then you turned off the encryption?

Was this using Apple's built in disk encryption?

I believe you can convert from encrypted to decrypted but it will take a long time to process. It's possible that the conversion is still going on in the background, so I think it may be reasonable to leave the disk attached for a few hours and keep the computer awake. A 500GB disk will take many hours to convert.

I suspect if you open Disk Utility (inside /Applications/Utilities) & look in the sidebar for the USB disk and select it could indicate if it encrypted or processing.

The process may be logged too, so open Console (also in the Utilities folder) and look for a log named Disk Utility.log, see if you can see any information that looks like it may be converting the disk.

You can post the log messages here, but take care not to grab too many.

If you used a different tool to encrypt & decrypt the disk you will need to let us know because some types may not be reversible.

They are the same library.  It is on my computer hard drive and contains about 2.34 GB.

    Users/*******/pictures/iphotolibrary.photolibray

Just so you know I have found individual jpg photos on my hard drive on the computer which are some of the photos I am looking for.  I was wondering how I can get them into I photo or aperture.  What I tried did not work.  Also there are a lot of duplication of the same photo plus those dang Faces photos.  Is there a way to import without the duplicates?

    Flash drives look like this:

    You have something like this:

    Screen Shot 2014-04-02 at 19.08.45.png

A hard drive (bigger and faster than a flash drive)

Okay how to answer that.  When the hard drive was visible on my desk top when it was plugged in, I right clicked on my pad and a menu came up that said "unencrypt".  I pressed it because I did not want to use a password anymore.  After that I could not mount it.  So which system did it?

In the meantime I will try and do as you directed and get back to you.
