Q: No application memory left.  Getting worse and worse.  My Mac Pro is basically unusable.  I am about to go back to a PC.

I am ready to go back to a PC.  I cannot use my computer.  I have lost photos.  Can't even download from carbonite to replace lost itemsk  because of lack of application memory.  It is driving me crazy.  This computer cost too much for this kind of thing to be happening.  Mine has been happening for over a year.  I can't get answers.

Iphoto ios, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5), OS X version 10.9.1

This is a picture of the 512GB Kingston USB Flash drive:

Please try to ignore extraneous posts, there is enough confusion here already.

You have an external, 500GB hard drive.

I now have the icon on my desktop for my external drive.  It is an entirely different emblem from before.  When I click on it now it opens showing exactly what I had just written to you.  I encrypted it.  Still waiting to see what will show the next time I open it.

When it was good, when I opened it it showed me on the first line:  I photo library

Adding & removing encryption should not change the contents of the disk. I'm sorry to say that if you cannot see the files on that disk they may not exist anymore. It must be that the disk was reformatted either by the removal of the encryption or by something else.

You also want to avoid encrypting & decrypting the disk if you hope to recover data from the disk.

The data could still exist on the disk, however once it is removed from the 'disk catalog' the space used will be freed & something else can overwrite that area of the disk.

Re-encrypting the disk will overwrite EVERYTHING on that disk, so you are drastically reducing the chances of recovering any files.

I'm really unsure what to advise because stopping the encryption process will not get your data back. I'm afraid that you need professional help to recover that data. Data recovery isn't cheap & it gets more complex when encryption is thrown into the mix.

    Sorry this isn't good news.

Decrypting takes hours, did you wait for it to finish or did you just disconnect the drive without checking?

It is still encrypting.  Why does it say it has 116 GB of used space yet it is not showing?

FWIT if you uploaded your iPhoto Library package to carbonite there's little chance that you'll get a working library back.  You should be able to get your master/original image files but not a working library.  There are no cloud backup providers that can backup an iPhoto Library package and maintain the myriad of links, database pointers, etc. that are needed for a library.  It needs to be on a volume formatted OS X Extended (journaled).

Well, unfortunately when I had my computer in for repairs they deleted most of my photos.  I am so over carbonite.

This leads me to next question:

I want to use time machine to back up my computer for the first time.  Do I have to have an airport?  Because I could not get it to work.  I have a laptop and have no idea about routers etc.  the only router we have is the once on my husbands PC and it is across the house.

I don't know how to thank everyone who has helped through this long ordeal!  But my heartfelt thanks for getting my computer back to a functioning place.

I am sick about my hardrive but maybe I will check into retrieving data at another time.  But who can one trust to do this.  Any ideas?

I will amend that slightly. SugarSync can but only under specific conditions. If you let SugarSync deal with the libraries like any other file they do not restore correctly (or at all) but. if you manually move a copy of the library to the SugarSync archive (which does not sync) restoration works. The caveat is that you have to do it manually, and frequently enough tor it to be useful, And you have to pay for the space.

Is it encrypting the drive, or decrypting the drive?

Thanks for the clarification.  Will remember that.

And I imagine the backup and restore time is somewhat lengthy, isn't it?
